Just got back from PAX South last week so I’ve written an article about it and here’s some more game reviews comin’ atcha as well!  Please click on the links and read as many as you can, and maybe even post a ‘like’ or comment or two.  I’d really appreciate it.  So grab your shovel, we’ve got a lot to dig through here!

PAX South 2020

Last week I went to PAX South in San Antonio, TX.  I go every year since it’s just a few hours’ drive from my house, even though it’s a smaller show.  This year it was especially small.  Mainly because PAX East in Boston is in just a month, so most big name companies are going to that.  Usually at least one big name company makes it to PAX South, but not this year.  No Namco, no Capcom, and no Nintendo.  Usually at least one of those guys shows. Don’t know why PAX scheduled the shows so close, they kind of shot themselves in the foot.  But that still doesn’t mean you shouldn’t read my article!  I took lots of neat pictures and I bet I wrote about at least one or two games you didn’t know about!

Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove (Switch)

I got a bunch of Shovel Knight stuff to review, so I dedicated a whole week to be Shovel Knight Week over at GamerDad.com.  Treasure Trove includes the original game and all the DLC where you can play as other characters, so it’s a pretty good value.  Only problem I had, aside from Shovel Knight being too darn hard (I can beat most Mega Man games, but not Shovel Knight), is that while playing as other characters offers some new gameplay mechanics, you’re still pretty much playing the same game.  I wish Yacht Club Games would make a new Shovel Knight game.  Maybe a 16-bit styled one and they could call it Super Shovel Knight.  And after that they could do a 3-D one and call it Shovel Knight 64.  Surely I’m not the only one who has thought of that.

Shovel Knight Showdown (Switch)

This is a Smash Bros. style fighting game featuring characters, stages, and graphics from Shovel Knight.  It’s not perfect, but fun in short bursts.  I can’t wait for Shovel Knight Dig!

Shovel Knight amiibo

Shovel Knight is one of the few third parties to get an amiibo figure, and now they have a bunch more!  As always, these are very cool so you should check them out.

Fishing Star: World Tour (Switch)

In my 20 plus years reviewing video games, I’ve written about tons of fishing titles.  I’ve found the ones that are the most fun are the less realistic and more cartoony ones, surprisingly.  Such is the case with Fishing Star: World Tour.  It’s clearly made for kids in mind, but it’s a lot of simple fun for all ages as well.  It’s very Japanese, which means sometimes the translations are off (“You catched two fishes!”), but it’s still fun.  It was published by Aksys Games, who have been supportive of me ever since they’ve been around pretty much.  In fact, I didn’t even ask to review this game, they just sent it to me when they mailed my review copy of Waku Waku Sweets.  And I’m glad they did!

Waku Waku Sweets (Switch)

This is basically Cooking Mama.  I’m surprised Cooking Mama hasn’t had a game on the Switch yet.  The Wii had like, three of them!  Anyway, Waku Waku Sweets is very Japanese, and very girly.  Not that there’s anything wrong with that, that’s just what it is.  Only problem is that some of the desserts you make are Japanese as well, so if you don’t know what “Wagashi” or “Dorayaki” is, you might be confused at first.

Clumsy Rush (Switch)

This is a racing game where you play as hippos, and press the L and R buttons move their left and right feet to waddle around.  I do like the Katamari styled graphics (and it has hippos), but there are too many random elements to the game, and not enough content to keep me interested.

Dead End Job (Switch)

And finally is this twin stick shooter where you exterminate ghosts.  I do like the Ren and Stimpy styled characters and Ghostbusters references, but the game wasn’t very much fun.  Way too hard and I just don’t like randomly generated levels.

And that’s all for now!  Thanks for reading my reviews and posting ‘likes’ and comments!  I do appreciate it.  Next time we’ll look at my best games from the past decade!  Later!  --Cary

That's too bad your PAX is shrinking. I know you enjoy it, and having bigger companies probably enhances it a lot.

I'll check out your articles a bit later.

Yes please I hope you can read some of my articles later.  Especially the PAX once, since it has a lot of neat pictures and such.

Young Souls looks good. I want that Shovel Knight three pack very much.

I can try and review Young Souls when it comes out if you like.  I have a pretty good relationship with Dotemu and The Arcade Crew.  Thanks for reading!

Yes please.

All right I'll make a note to try and request a review copy of that when it comes out.  No guarantees, though, as sometimes I can request a game and still not get it.

So here's another question for you.  I recently discovered a mobile endless clicker based on Metal Slug.  It's been out for a while, so I decided not to review it, but if you want me to, I can.

Metal Slug Attack? Oh yes please. I love the graphics in those games.

It's actually Metal Slug Infinite, but I just downloaded it so I'll review it later.  But the review probably won't post until late February or early March.

OMG. Those graphics are so amazing! I want my OLED VIta back and be able to play it on that.
