Developer: Konami

Publisher: Konami

Genre: Beat 'em up

Release: 1992

Currently available on: cartridge only

About the game: The fourth game in Konami's Turtles series has the turtles battling their way through nine levels full of foot soldiers and Turtles villains. The combat is fluid and fun, and each of the four turtles have unique attacks. What makes this game so great is the setting and levels. About half-way through the game, the Turtles are sent back in time--you get to play through some historic settings, such as the Prehistoric Age, a pirate ship, an Old West train, and then get flung into the far futrue. This is SO much better than fighting a bunch of street thugs in a dirty city. Playing through the game with a friend is even better. This is an arcade port, and believe it or not, the SNES port is actually superior to the arcade game thanks to some excellent additions and changes.

Why I love it: Guys! This is my favorite game ever! Just writing about it makes me want to go play it again. We first rented this game from Blockbuster when I was about 7 years old, and I was enthralled with it! Because it was a beat 'em up, I was able to quickly learn the gameplay and enjoy the game more than I had ever enjoyed a game before. The different levels were so cool, I loved every one of them. Fighting Super Shredder at the end was so epic. And here's the thing: I have tons of nostalgia for this game, but the game holds up perfectly. It's just as fun to play now as it was back then. I would say this is the GREATEST beat 'em up of all time, at least in my book. It's also the best Ninja Turtles game by far.

Best. Beat-'em-up. Ever. The fact that the SNES version has never been rereleased in any form is a crime against humanity.

Absolutely true. Also, the remake was garbage (plus it was a remake of the arcade version).

I have never played this, but it looks awesome!

You need to play it! Although you would have to get the cart (it's never been rereleased, so sad)

All this SNES talk is getting me crazy for a deck that can play SNES, NES, Genesis and Sega Master System games. I get rid of stuff and then regret it later, as always.

Well, there is hardware out there to play multiple console games. Maybe you should get one...

Oh man, I have so many memories with this game.  My brother Jeff and I have a history with it.  We actually owned this game, but we got it on sale from a movie rental place that was closing down.

So when the SNES was big, my brother Jeff was just a toddler.  But he still enjoyed watching me play games on the SNES.  Since I was big into RPGs at the time, he loved to watch me play games like "Chwono Twigger" and "Mario PG" as he called them.  He also really liked Donkey Kong Country.  In fact, "Donkey Kong' was one of Jeff's first words!  And poor Jeff cried at the end of Super Metroid when he watched me beat it, because he was sad about the baby Metroid.

But as he got a little older, we wanted to find some games we could play together.  Which was a little harder back then.  Sure games like Smash TV and Contra 3 had two player modes, but they were a little too hard for a four year old like him (and for me, too, to be honest).  Luckily we did find a few.  Our favorite was probably Kirby Super Star, but we also spent a heck of a lot of time with Turtles in Time.  Only problem is that when we would play, if I accidentally got one of the pizzas, Jeff would whine, "Mooooommmmm!  Cary got the pizza!"  So it was really hard to play the game when I couldn't recover my health!  But we beat it several times anyway somehow.  And give Jeff a break, he was only four.

We still joke about "Moooommmm!  Cary got the pizza!" to this very day!

Great story! I think Turtles 4 is one of the best co-op games ever. So fun.

Seeing this reminds me this game was snubbed from the SNES Mini lineup.

That makes me sad.
