Developer: Capcom

Publisher: Capcom

Genre: Action Platformer

Release: 1993

Currently available on: Mega Man X Collection, Wii U VC, New 3DS VC, SNES Classic Edition, Mega Man X Legacy Collection

About the game: After six MM games, Capcom finally decided to shake things up a little bit with the formula. You can still do levels in any order of your choice, and the gameplay is basically the same, but what sets this apart is some power-ups and collectibles that you can find. Health upgrades and armor upgrades can be found in each of the eight levels. You can beat the game without them, but it will be much harder. Level design, gameplay, bosses, and music are all very good here.

Why I love it: This is actually the first MM game I ever beat! There's something very satisfying about discovering a hidden area and finding a capsule for an upgrade. I'm not a completionist, but I just HAD to get all the armor upgrades (mostly because I wanted to beat the game). And yes, this game is actually beatable thanks to these upgrades. But of course, the game is also great because of the awesome Mavericks, the new animal-themed robot bosses.

While I don't like the Mega Man X games as much as the original games, the first X game was exactly what the series needed at the time.  I have this game on the SNES, and have played it multiple times and know where all the secrets are, even to this day.  It's one of my favorite games in the whole series, alongside MM3, MM2, and MM8.

Yeah, it's hard not to love the first MMX. I think the X series rivals the original series pretty well, with X1 and X4 being the high points, and most of the other games being quite strong. The upgrades make the games a bit easier than the original series.

Yeah X1 and X4 are the best.  X2 and 3 aren't bad.  X5 is at least playable.  Any X game after that is trash, though.

I've been wanting to play the X series for a while. Maybe they're less as brutally difficult as the previous series.

They're definitely less brutal than the Zero series that came after.

I would say they're less brutal thanks to the upgrades. I completely recommend X1 and X4

One of the Megaman collections is on Game Pass right now. I'll have to look to see which one.

I deeply respect the mega man games but I can't handle them.

They are very hard, but the X games are easier than most other MM games imo

Capcom got this game so right that the series arguably never got better than this. It's a shame, really. And I love the animal theme for the bosses.

True, but I think you could make an argument with X4. But I think we both know that sometimes the best one is the first one.

I actually preferred and rented X2 a lot more as a kid, mainly for the motorcycles and slightly darker setting.

However, this has awesome music, presentation and gameplay too and I get why people like it more.
