Monument-Valley-02

Monument Valley is an iPad (and I think Android now) game that I played back in 2014 when I was really into playing games on my iPad. I reviewed it for Pixlbit here:

I can't say much about it any better than I did in the above review. It's a great game.

I enjoyed writing the few reviews I did for this site, but I realized I wasn't very good at it. First of all, it takes me ages to beat games, but I also let my emotions get in the way a lot. Maybe this is good for game reviews, maybe not. I think if I reviewed games again, it would be in my own way, but I'm not sure what way that would be.

I think the problem with reviews (and it's a problem that has common sense behind it), is it's mostly a value oriented process helping people to determine whether or not to spend their money on the game. If I did write reviews again, I think it would be more like literary criticism, and would feature more analysis of the game (mechanics, story, emotional reactions, graphics, sound, etc.) rather than a simple value based judgment. Games are complex things, and I think when you just equate them into a scoring process you're missing a lot. That being said, there are games that are great, games that suck, and games that are just ok. Like anyting else.

I remember people talking about this game, but I never played it.

I like the idea of approaching games with a literary criticial style. I think there should be a Siskel and Ebert for video games. Each has a strong opion that they put into their review. That's great!
