Developer: Capcom

Publisher: Capcom

Genre: Platformer

Release: 1993

Currently available on: GBA

About the game: This game often gets overlooked by the much adored Genesis game of the same name, but this version is actually better in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, the Genesis game looks gorgeous, but this game has much better gameplay. Aladdin can jump, bounce off enemies, throw apples, and even glide through the air using a sheet. Level design here is excellent, with Aladdin fighting his way through Agrabah, the cave of wonders, Genie's world, a sand temple, and Jafar's palace. Two levels will have you flying on a magic carpet. Most notably, this game was designed by Shinji Mikami, the man behind the Resident Evil series.

Why I love it: This is one of the first SNES games we bought, so I have a lot of great memories. It's an easy game; in fact, I think this is one of the first games I ever beat. The hardest part of the game is the level where you have to escape the cave of wonders on the magic carpet, but with enough practice, you can beat it. This is just all around an excellent platformer, and Capcom made the best Disney games during this era. It's a shame this was overlooked in the recent Lion King/Aladdin ports to modern consoles.

I played this on emulation back in the late nineties. The graphics and animation are amazing. This is a game that definitely made me wish I had a SNES back in the day.

To be fair, the animation for the Genesis Aladdin game is really great, but this game still looks very good.

I was a SNES guy and not much into licensed games by that point (my SNES pleasures were Zelda, Metroid, Mortal Kombat II, and Final Fantasy VI) but I was surprised when I read how popular the Genesis game was on Wikipedia. Aladdin was apparently the third best-selling Genesis game of all time, behind two Sonic games.

This game sold half of what the Genesis version did, but it still managed to be Capcom's most successful non-Street Figjhter game on SNES.

I agree that this is better than the Genesis version and I'm also sad it wasn't on the Aladdin/Lion King collection.

I never owned this game or rented it, but I did play it briefly at my cousin's house.

It's a shame that this isn't on the Aladdin/Lion King collection because it's actually good. Yes, Genesis Aladdin and Lion King are both mediocre games, making that collection nothing more than for the sake of nostalgia.

I might have played it in my flea market buying days but I'm not sure. Those graphics are pretty great. I want to play it again. I guess it's not available digitally anywhere?

Sadly, it's not. Not sure why they didn't include it on the recent collection.
