Developer: Konami
Publisher: Konami
Genre: Run n' Gun
Release: 1993
Currently available on: cartridge only
About the game: Sunset Riders plays a lot like Contra, except it's set in the Old West. Each level has you hunting down a wanted outlaw. You can upgrade your gun to shoot more bullets that move faster. You can also pick up gold for points. Level vareity is good, with some levels having you move on foot and others on horseback. Levels will have you going through towns, side country, an old train, a mountain, and an enemy fortress. The bosses are a real standout; you'll face outlaws such as Simon Greedwell, Hawkeye Hank Hatfield, the Smith Brothers (who throw bombs), El Greco (who attacks with a whip), and the most wanted outlaw, Sir Richard Rose. The muffled voices add a charm to the game despite being pretty bad now. This is a perfect port of the arcade game, and is far superior to the Genesis version.
Why I love it: I remember playing this as a kid. We never owned it, but my older brother had a friend who would let us borrow it. I love the Old West aesthetic, which is quite rare on the SNES. As usual, Konami went above and beyond. The levels are filled with little details and the soundtrack is perfect. This is once again an excellent co-op game. But as is the case with Konami games, it's really hard! But that just means you need to take the time to practice and get good so you can see the ending.
