Developer: Traveller's Tales

Publisher: Sony Imagesoft

Genre: Platformer

Release: 1994

Currently available on: Genesis, Sega CD, PS1

About the game: This is possibly the best Mickey Mouse game on the SNES, which is saying something. In the game, Mickey has to travel back in time to rescue other Mickeys. The levels are actually based on real Mickey Mouse cartoons, such as Steamboat Willie, The Lonesome Ghosts, and the Prince and the Pauper. Each level is distinct, offering a variety of enemies and challenges. You won't be doing just platforming as the game has some good variety in gameplay, including riding on lab beds avoiding deadly razor saws, putting a chemical combination together to blow up a door, and running from a rampaging moose (in Mode 7!).

Why I love it: This game is so good! I first bought it because I thought "Mickey Mouse game, why not." I was amazed at how creative and fun the game was. It's clear that TT put a lot of love into the game. Each level is charming and memorable. Character animations are so expressive and detailed that it's like you're playing the cartoon. Presentation here is also strong, and the game's soundtrack is excellent. Perhaps the only downside here is that it's only single player. Still, this is most certainly worth playing, and it holds up perfectly today.

These Disney games look great from this period. I've played Castle of Illusion but not this one yet.

This game looks amazing! Really nice fluid animation, it's like the cartoon.

I never rented Mickey Mania nor did I own it.  But I played it a lot.  How?  Well, back in the day, my friend and I would go to the Blockbuster Music near my house, and they had a lot of video game demo stations.  Remember those?  One of them had Mickey Mania and I played it a lot there.  I liked the first level where it was first black and white and gradually changed to color as you progressed.

I don't think I've ever been to Blockbuster Music, but I have plenty of memories of renting games from Blockbuster.

Well it was a Sound Warehouse before it was a Blockbuster Music.  Both stores sold music CDs and other electronics.  I mostly rented games from the mom and pop rental place in town called PayLess Video.

Never played this one. I had a Genesis anyway, which had World of Illusion, Fantasia, Quackshot, Aladdin, Castle of Illusion. But all the Disney games from the 16 bit era are beautiful if nothing else.

There are so many great Disney games from this era. The thing is, most of them are console exclusive. There are several Mickey Mouse games on both SNES and Genesis, and most of them are exclusive to that console.

This is better than CoI imo although it's only single player

This game's graphics floored me at the time and still do. Loved the variety but not so uch the level where you run toward the screen.

Yeah, that's by far the most frustrating part of the game.
