BaD #13: Deus Ex and Dead Space Novels

Finally, something I've read through! (I promise, folks, I do actually read things.) I love the Deus Ex franchise and have read both of the novels you see below. The first one, Icarus Effect, is a prequel to Deus Ex: Human Revolution and stars original characters. It is pretty good and really helps to set up the world that the games take place in. This novel was followed by a mobile game that was an honest to goodness full Deus Ex experience that continued the story of these characters. The game is supposedly quite good but when I tried it I could not grok the controls. The screen was so cluttered with buttons and icons and menus! The second novel, Black Light, stars Adam Jensen from the console games as well as some other familiar faces like Pritchard. Of the two it was the novel I enjoyed more, perhaps because of its intrinsic fanservice qualities, but they were both good. I don't know that I would recommend them to someone who was not a fan of the games (there are so many great science fiction novels that stand alone, after all) but if you enjoyed that world and are looking for more, by all means dive in.

The Dead Space series is another I greatly love but I have not read these books yet. Like the games, these are horror and well regarded. I'll get to them sometime.

I had trouble with the original Deus Ex too.

There is an excellent Dead Space graphic novel I read years ago. The writer was Antony Johnston and I followed him for a while in his Wasteland series.

The reviews of the Dead Space graphic novels always seemed pretty mixed, so I wasn't sure if I should go after those or not. But maybe I'll check out the ones by that author.

I thought he was pretty good. I think he had something to do with the writing on one of the games as well.

Interesting. Didn't know there were so many game-based books. I'd prefer to read more about the Denton brothers and UNATCO. i wonder if books based on the first two games exist.

I don't know of any but those games definitely came before the boom of game tie-in stuff of the last 10-15 years.

I tried playing a Deus Ex game but couldn't really get into it.

I do think I'd like Dead Space.
