My PS1 went to console heaven today.....

It finally bit the dust. Can't believe it lasted this long as I've had it for about a decade now. It was brand new when I got it and I always treated it carefully. But everything has it's time to go. It gave me many hours of enjoyment and will be missed. So now I have several options available and was hoping for some input from you. I'm sure you have had the same issues with PS1 and other consoles before.

Option one is to just get a PS1 slim. They are compact and efficient little buggers that don't cost much. Saw a few at pawn shops for 20 bucks. I'm assuming that my old memory cards and controllers will be compatible, but not sure. I've never played one or known someone who has.

Option two is to get the one I saw at Vintage Stock. It was one of these. With it's own little LCD screen you can attach. I forgot these even existed! Even has a carrying case and two controllers with it. All for 50 bucks. And it's in superb condition as well. The third option is to get a PS2 slim for about 60 bucks. Would take up less room than another option. My PS2 refuses to play PS1 games anymore, and it did at one time. So a slimmer one would save me some space. Things were much simpler when my original PS3 was alive. I could play them all on that one. It was a big, noisy beast that was a dust magnet. Only had a 60 gig HD which truly sucked.More than likely I will take the simple route, which is the first option. Just makes sense. So if you have any info on the PS1 slim I would love to know. And in other news this weekend...

We went to see Oblivion yesterday. We wanted to see Iron Man 3,but every other person in Tulsa had the same idea apparently! We did not want to wait in a long line for tickets and then another to get in....so we decided to see it next weekend. Oblivion turned out to be a pretty decent film. I like sci-fi movies with unexpected twists in them. This one had them,as well as some pretty good action and freaky tech parts. Tom Cruise was great in the film, but he usually is outstanding. Guy might be a bit loopy and full of Scientology weirdness, but he can seriously act. He has that quality about him that can't be learned or taught. You are simply born with it.

I will be general about things here to avoid any spoilers. The part with the drones is what I thought was highly interesting. They play a big part in the story,as Jack[Cruise's character] is a repairman of sorts on a devastated Earth. He goes out to repair drones that crash or get damaged. These are heavily armed drones that kill off scavengers they detect. To prevent the sabotage of the giant energy harvesters that draw in sea water. Drones can be programmed to kill certain people or creatures in the movie. They kill quickly and with precision. Is it so far fetched to think governments won't use modern drones in the same manner? Later in the movie Jack discovers that all he has known is a lie. Has to see the truth for himself because it just sounds too unreal. But when he finds out what is really going on things start to get very bad.

Another cool part of the film is the ship Jack gets around in. This thing is very fast and manueverable. Does stuff that will freak you out. Pretty amazing to see it in action. The cockpit can rotate and fire at any angle or direction. So if you had someone on your tail you could swing around and shoot at them while flying ahead.

Found this PS1 game on Friday for 5 bucks. I remembered it as being kinda fun even though it got horrible reviews. I had some maps of the levels in the building the game takes place in. Had kind of a Die Hard feel to it due to that setting. But I also liked the anime look of the two main characters,Alex and Michelle.

Anime hair, anime eyes, and anime style action in the game. That was the appeal for me at first. So I will play it again once I get my new PS1.

I remember fighting lots of robots and drones in the game. You progress from floor to floor on your way up the building. The key finding parts were a pain in the butt,I do remember that. But for 5 bucks my expectations are pretty low....it's worth a shot. Hope you're having a great weekend and enjoy the rest of it!

What I'm listening to today......

Sorry about that.  The PS Slim was pretty cool.  About the size of a Schlotzky's sandwich, too!

Yeah, you can't beat it for size. I'm thinking of getting a small Sony or RCA flat screen TV for playing old school games on. They just don't look right on my big HDTV. I remember them being crisper.

sorry about your PS1.  I had to put my PS2 down about a year ago.  Was hard.

and another one bites the dust. I'd say go with option 3 so you can save some space. sure you won't have the full authentic PS1 feel but it would be the most pratical. I still have my PS1 slim hooked up but never play it since I have my PS2/PS3 also prepped and set.

the second option looks cool though. always wanted the LCD screen if only to free up a conection port on Game Rig 3.

*pours champaigne on the casket*

I say just get the PS2. You have so many more gaming options available to you that way.

It would be nice to take on trips. Such a compact gaming rig. Of course, you have to lug around games and controllers.

When the ancient one that was Jason's brother's (new purchase when they first came out) died on me (fourth hand-me-down owner, lol), I bought a PS1 slim new from Game Stop for $50. Everything works just the same with it as the original.

Cool! Thanks for the info on that. I should be able to find one of them pretty easily. Some places have several for sale right now.

PS2:  I vote on getting a PS2, that way you have a back-up in case your current PS2 breaks a leg and has to be put down. I bought a new PS2 a a couple of years ago, but Im always on the look out for anything playstation at my weekly yard sale visits.

I may end up doing both. I am very curious to see if the PS2 slim performs better.

I have both and enjoy them. The one with the LCD works great , but some games do not play on it.

They made those LCD screens for PS2s too. I can't remember if they were for the originals or the slims. I think they were for the big ones, but my quick check of amazon didn't turn anything up. Just another option...maybe?

Were it me, I'd probably be looking for an early-gen PS3. I love my 60-gigger, since it plays 15 years worth of games on one machine and I don't have to hook as much stuff up to a TV. Failing that, I'd probably get a PS2.

I love Vintage Stock! I find so many rare goodies, particularly at the Oklahoma City, Midwest City, and Norman stores! My most recent find there was Suikoden II, complete, for $99. I can't find that game for any less than $120 for the disc only on eBay or Amazon.

I vote for the ps2 as well!

Those PS1s with the LCD screen attached look awesome, and $50 for one is not too shabby, I think. SanAndreas makes a good point, though.

Oblivion looks cool, but I'll probably catch it on DVD. I need to see Iron Man 3 as well.

The girl from TRAG looks a lot like Samus in that suit.

Can't go wrong with Nightwish. I like the new vocalist too, but man, Tarja was just amazing. Liked the classic rock feel of Triumph as well. Sounds vaguely like Rush, but less technical.

Not to jinx you but your PS2 could bite it eventually too, so you would be killing 2 birds by just getting the PS2, plus it has the texture smoother option which realy does make ps1 games look a bit better. Been looking at getting a back up PS2 myself and an extra memory card. Of course this would not be neccessary if Sony and Nintendo had lived up to the hype and had their entire catalogue of games available via digital download. This same kind of bs is why people still have turn tables, because there are a lot of albums that never got re-released on cd. So instead we have to stockpile ancient technology. Kind of reminds me of a Cowboy Bebop episode where they have to track down a working vcr.

Whoa..

I didn't know PS1's could die? I thought they were immortal!

I've had mine since launch, and it's still going strong despite playing countless RPGs for hours on end!

Ouch that sucks. I had my original die on my (it was at the point where I needed to have the dang thing sit on it's side so it could read the discs)

If I had a vote, I'd say go for a PSOne replacement. The other comments make sense about having it as a backup for the PS2 as well, but it just doesn't feel the same playing on a PS2.
