Developer: HAL Laboratory

Publisher: Nintendo

Genre: Action Platformer

Release: 1996

Currently available on: Wii U VC, Kirby's Dream Collection, SNES Classic Edition, Nintendo Switch Online

About the game: The box for this game makes the claim "8 games in 1." Techinically, it's 9 games once you beat everything and unlock the Arena, but the point is, there's a lot here. When you start the game, only a few games will be available. You have to beat these games in order to unlock the other games. Most the games here are simple side scrolling Kirby adventures (such as Spring Breeze, Dynablade, and The Revenge of Meta Knight). The Great Cave Offensive is more of a Metroidvania where Kirby must explore several different areas finding treasure. The most expansive game is Milky Way Wishes, which has some exciting moments and sees Kirby face off against Marx. There are also some fun mini games: Samurai Kirby and Megaton Punch (which are a lot of fun with a friend). The game offers a whopping 20 abilities that Kirby can use, the most in the franchise up to this point. Trying different abilities is as fun as ever, and the variety of moves Kirby has is quite impressive. Oh yes, and most of these games can be played co-op with a friend playing as any of the enemies (turned good, of course).

Why I love it: I have a lot of nostalgia for this one. I think we used to rent it from Blockbuster before finally securing a copy. This is still the best Kirby game imo. All the games are so fun. The Meta Knight game is a standout for me because it's such a cool story as Kirby destroys Meta Knight's ship and it climaxes in an epic dual with Meta Knight and then an escape sequence! Milky Way Wishes is also fantastic, and even has some shooter sections. The game is enhanced thanks to the co-op feature. The mini games are also really fun, being simple and addicting. The music is also a huge standout with some of the best Kirby themes you will find. I love Kirby music because it's so upbeat and catchy. If you want a challenge, you can try to collect all the treasures in The Great Cave Offensive (I could never do it). Overall, this is a great package, and is still a lot of fun to play.

This is a very special game to me because this is one of the SNES games that little brother Jeff and I would play together when he was young.  Even though Jeff is grown now and plays more mature games, he still gets nostalgic about Kirby Super Star and still plays it from time to time.

I also played this game when I was pretty young, and I think those games are some of the most precious and nostalgic, just because things tend to leave bigger impressions on you when you're young.

I didn't really get into this one on SNES Mini, but seems fun.

If I can get some time away from my Xbox and PS4, I really want to play a bunch of Kirby games. I have the Dream Collection. I really love the design of the characters.
