Smash games are always great. I didn't give it my GOTY award when it came out, though, because it's pretty much the same game as the Wii U version, just more of it. And I was more impressed with Labo.

Games of the Decade #6/Blog a Day #25
Hello everybody, how are you?
There are video games out there that have become a big event whenever a game is announced and released. These games usually tend to be crossover games and for a good reason because most of the time these type of games don't always happen due to various licensing issues and whatnot which makes it a huge deal. For this game we will be talking about what could be considered the biggest crossover in video games. For number 6 we will be looking at Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
This game has over 1000 songs, you'll never need another soundtrack ever again ♥
Backstory time: In March 8, 2018 we got a teaser for a potential new Smash game as the final announcement of a Nintendo Direct. What was really clever for those that don't now, they basically recreated the teaser trailer for the first Splatoon game. We didn't know what this meant as it could of been teasing a Switch port of the first game but it wasn't. However once E3 came by that year, all of our questions were answered with the reveal of Super Smash Bros Ultimate which was indeed a new game in the series. The best part of that is the tagline "Everyone is here!" meaning that every single character that has ever appeared in the previous games will be in Ultimate. The game released in December 7 on the same year but how does it stack up against the previous games?
If you've played any of the Smash Bros. games before then you know what to expect. If you haven't, basically you pick a character from a big roster of Nintendo characters and some third-party characters (as of Brawl for the Wii) and you basically beat the crap out of each other in various stages from those franchises with items and custom rules and more. Basically that's the premise of the games.
The game features a wealth of modes to choose from that involve playing solo to playing others either locally or online so I won't talk about those since you're most likely familiar with them. The biggest new addition to the game is the World of Light mode which is the equivalent of Adventure Mode from Melee or The Subspace Emissary from Brawl if you've ever played any of those games. It's a story mode of sorts that has you travel across a board and fighting against a puppet army based on the characters from the game and save the real characters and save the day. It's a really fun mode and I will tell you that the reveal trailer for that mode was so good that I cried.

Playing online with friends is so much fun when random happens
The biggest thing about these games is the roster of characters. There's always discussion on the internet about which characters will make it in and which wont. Since "Everyone is Here" we have characters like Pichu returning who hasn't been seen since Melee to Snake who has kept us waiting since Brawl. Every character who was a dlc fighter in Smash 4 is also now part of the base roster. We also have new characters in the game too like Inkling from Splatoon to Simon Belmont from Castlevania. Newcomers have entered the fray in the form of dlc like Joker from Persona 5 and Banjo and Kazooie.
"But Captain N, where can I play this game?" On the Switch my friend. You can get it either physically or digitally but I have never seen this game on sale and I doubt it will ever go on sale any time soon. There's also dlc for the game in the form of the Fighter's Pass which adds more characters to the game. The game is still worth it even if you don't want the extra characters though.
Final Thoughts: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a fantastic game. It's a culmination of basically every Smash Bros game to date. From the characters and stages and the music. Everyone and pretty much everything is here. Give or take a few levels. The amount of music is astounding, there's a ton of music and one thing I love about these games is the different rednetions of familiar songs done by different composers from the industry. It's always a treat to see their take on a familiar tune.
Our one true savior
So far we have all the 5 characters from the first Fighter's Pass revealed. I will say that when I saw Banjo and Kazooie as one of the dlc fighters, I cried, I couldn't believe they were in Smash. But there is another fighter pass coming too but we don't know who are the next characters joining the game. We are getting 6 more characters in this next pass but it will be the last pass for the game. Whether you are a fan of this or not, I just want to say that I hope Sakurai gets a break as he desperately needs one
Super Smash Bros Ultimate has gone on to become basically a video game museum of the history of video games, basically a homage to Nintendo and video games as a whole which are not only represented by Nintendo games, but other companies like Sega, Capcom, Namco, Konami, Atlus, Rare and more. You have all this wealth of content from the stages that are in the game, the music that they composed, to the characters that are in the game. Everything in Ultimate is directly lifted from the game they are from and are recreated in Ultimate with as much accuracy as possible with as much detail as possible. The amount of work and attention to detail is astounding that only someone with attention to detail who truly loves video games can make. It feels like a wonderful love letter to the history of video games made by someone who loves video games. Or simply put, an archive.
One thing this series is really good at doing is making you aware of all these different franchises represented in Smash Bros. A kid playing Ultimate won't know who characters like Banjo or Ryu are, or the Ice Climbers. But the power of this series is making you aware that there are so many different types of games out there thanks to the character representation in these games. None of us knew Marth and Roy nor Fire Emblem nor that these characters and games existed till we got Melee.
This series has come along way since its humble beginnings on the N64
How many of you have ever played Fire Emblem before Smash brought attention to the series? A lot of people are playing Persona 5 for the first time thanks to Joker being in the game and no doubt will try out the other games in the series, probably. It's thanks to this series that I was able to play so many different types of games that I probably wouldn't have otherwise. This was probably their intention to get you into their other games but I'm not complaining. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is definitely the most ambitious crossover in history, yes more than Infinity War.
That's it for this one. I'll be back with #5 after some Smash...
