What If: Super Smash Bros. Retro

What if Super Smash Bros. had started on the NES? It would have been no-less cool, but a little different. For one thing, it would have starred the 8-bit heroes we know and love, such as Mario, Link, Samus, Snake, Ryu Hyabusa, Bill Rizer, and others. Fox McCloud, Captain Falcon, and others who made their appearances in the SNES day would have been absent. Stages would be straight out of the games. The gameplay would be the same, hitting opponents and racking up damage to send them off the stage; they would then jump back to the stage.

This game would have been awesome (as you can tell from the "screenshots," which I put together). But, of course, this did not happen; SSB didn't come around until 1999 for the N64. But hold on: how cool would it be if Nintendo released something like this on the 3DS? We know that the next SSB is coming to Wii U AND 3DS. This would be awesome. Obviously, it would appeal to older gamers who enjoyed the NES days. I would call it Super Smash Bros. Retro. Perhaps it could be a downloadable game for the 3DS eshop. What do you think? Do you think this would be a good idea? (it's fun to fantasize)

stage 4

I also want to speculate about the next SSB, which will be revealed soon (hopefully). This is what I think they should do: I think they should call it Super Smash Bros. Universe, and include all kinds of video game characters, not just Nintendo ones. The roster would include Mega Man, Simon Belmont, Lara Croft, Bomberman, Bonk, Viewtiful Joe, Pac-Man, Master Chief, and so many more. Also, let's see eight fighters on the stage at once! Online play would be insane (in a good way).

So what do you think? If you love the SSB series as much as I do, then you're interested to see what Nintendo is going to do with it. What do you think they should do? Comment below please, and don't hold back.

I'm really hoping they bring a Belmont into the mix for the next Smash Bros. Megaman would also be a very welcomed addition as well, but definitely a Belmont for sure!

For me, Mega Man is the number one choice; c'mon, he's had more games than any other character (I'm pretty sure) and has left a HUGE impact on the industry. He deserves to be in the next SSB. But I'm with you, so does a Castlevania character.

Oh I agree man, I would totally love to see a Megaman. However, the only thing that has me hesitating is the knowledge of him doing physical attacks opposed to soley using his buster like in most games. I just think it'll be kind of odd to see our Blue Bomber throwing a punch.

I would buy this in a heartbeat lol. Those screenshots are beautiful man! Maybe include Little Mac from Punch Out! or Nathan Spencer from Bionic Commando? He could use his bionic arm like a spear or something.

Yeah, there are some great 8-bit heroes that I didn't include, like you mentioned. The double dragon dudes would be cool too.

I have a feeling that frustration would abound though.

Frustration from the old school feel or something else?

i worry that the controls would be very touchy.

I think a Retro version of SSB would be awesome. Maybe they could have 8-bit characters and stages as unlockables, in addition to trophies and such.

What would be cool is if you could unlock or win an 8-bit downloadable game if you complete so much in the new SSB for 3DS. It would be simple, with just a handful of characters and stages, but it would be awesome!

That would be pretty awesome (nice screenshots btw). SSB Retro would be a great downloadable title to drum up excitement for the release of the next proper series installment.

As for the future of the series, I think it'd be great if they included plenty of non-Nintendo characters, though I do think they would have had to appear on a Nintendo console at some point (sorry, Master Chief). I'd like to see Saki from Sin and Punishment as a playable character instead of just an assist trophy, and putting in Bayonetta would be a great way to promote her new game coming to the Wii U.

Saki would be awesome! Bayonetta, too; and while we're at it, maybe Travis Touchdown from the No More Heroes games?

The gameplay was different, but Konami was doing something like this with their characters with the Wai Wai World games on Famicom.

Interesting. I'll have to look into that game as I've never heard of it before. SSB Retro would be a blast from the past AND ultimate Nintendo fan service!
