Games Beaten
-Cosmic Star Heroine (PS4)
The sprite work in CSH is tremendous with tons of detail and animations. The music is good and spacey, though not often catchy. The battle system is the meat of the game and quite fun. Normal battles can last a little too long at times but the boss fights are often a strategic delight (I played on what amounted to Hard, I think, though they didn't call it that). I love the humor that pervades the game and the characters are a lot of fun. The story keeps things moving but never gets very deep or really explores anyone's motivations. It's a fun romp and not too long. Plus, I earned the Platinum trophy!
-Mega Man Zero (MM Zero/ZX Legacy Collection, Switch)
Mega Man Zero offers a surprising amount of freedom, even if it isn't very good at telling you. The world is mostly open to explore and search for secrets or grind upgrades for your cyber-elves, but it is completely unnecessary to beat the game (even if it can make it easier). Same goes for cyber-elves (equipable/disposable upgrades, basically). So it could be more focused. But the controls are as tight and responsive as ever, the bosses are fun and (mostly) fair, and the sprites are lovely.
-Mega Man Zero 2 (MM Zero/ZX Legacy Collection, Switch)
MMZ2 is undoubtably an improvement on the first game. It feels much more like a Mega Man game, due in large part to simply showing you the boss of the level you are about the tackle. There are a lot of secrets and extras to search for or power up...but if you don't care about that stuff (like me), that leads to the game feeling much less focused than its predecessor. The base feels totally unessential. But controls are tight and levels are fun and challenging. That's what I come for.
Games Bought
April felt like a busy month of acquisitions but it really wasn't so bad, looking back. I picked Indivisible for the PS4, which is such a pretty game. It's a very different take on the RPG compared to Cosmic Star Heroine, but still feels like it's in the same general camp, if that makes any sense. I got The Ninja Saviors—Return of the Warriors (Switch), which I really thought I would have already played through by now but it's still sitting over there on the shelf (I mean, I did already have a busy month of 2D action, as you can see above). Also got Dragon Marked for Death (Switch), a newer game by Inti Creates (makers of the MM Zero games). On the Switch download side we bought Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Night in the Woods, and Overcooked 2 (yay for sales).
Games Being Played
-Pokémon Shield (Switch)
I needed a break after MM Zero 2 and went for something quite different. I've earned three gym badges so far and am on my way to get the fourth.
-Picross 3D (DS)
I had a hankering to play picross but couldn't bring myself to buy another one on the Switch when I've had this one sitting and waiting patiently for so long. I've done well over a hundred puzzles and I'm still in the Easy section. Might be playing this for a long time!
-God Eater 3 (PS4)
In the Rank 4 missions. The story is really picking up.
-Destiny 2 (PS4)
Still just plugging away at stuff and playing with friends.
