So I am in the process of moving. One good thing about it is I have an excuse to get my game collection all together. I boxed it all up and keep finding random things here and there to add to it.
My collection is immense, the problem is, a good portion of it is crap. Just stockpiles of common games, magazines, guides, promo material, posters, demos and whatever have you. I don't know why Im compelled to keep all this stuff and I keep wondering if I'm a collector or a hoarder. I feel like the stupidest thing could be worth money, like a demo or something. Plus the magazines, I have so many magazines I don't know what to do with them. I still have my EGM's, Gamepros, Nintendo Powers, Game Players, Video Games & Computer Entertainment, Gamefan, and many more. I finally gave up the GameInformers. I traded them in to a private game store and he gave me a bit of store credit. He said his wife takes all the magazines and cuts them up to make displays out of them. UghI also traded in a stack of Atari Computer magazines from the 80's. I think he might cut those up too. I'd rather see him resell them and make a profit.
Over the years I held on to this stuff thinking it would be worth money someday, or maybe my kids would stumble upon the box and get a kick out of going through it. But "the box" turned into "boxes", then "many boxes", then a freekin mountain of boxes. Just the magazines alone could fill half a skid, perhaps fill a skid. Then there is the separate console collection, NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, 3DO, Genesis 1, Genesis 2, Genesis 3, Sega CD/32x, Sega CDX, Sega Saturn, Sega Nomad, Sega Master System, Sega Power Base Converter, Intellivision, Colecovision, Vectrex, Virtual Boy, PS1, PS2, Xbox, Xbox 360, Game Gear, Lynx, Jaguar, Gameboy, Gameboy Pocket, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Pocket Color, Gameboy Advance, Gameboy Advance SP, Gameboy Advance SP Famicom Edition, Atari 2600, 5200, 7800, TurboGrafx: 16 and a nice collection of games to go with them. So yea, its crazy, and I still consider this collection to be weak sauce since I don't have a real NeoGeo or TurboGrafx CD.
Then I have bags of extra controllers and wires and adapters, power plugs, cover thingies, memeory cards, RF switches, converter boxes, selector switches. Then various swag of t-shirts, hats, wrist bands, a stopwatch, a compass, drinking glasses, promo material up the whazoo.
I don't know what its all worth, I think about selling a good chunk to make space and use the money to buy a killer PC set up. Thing is, the value of the games could continue to grow while no matter what I spend on a PC it will be obsolete soon enough.
But what if I been carting all this stuff for so long and I lose it somehow, either a natural disaster or theft, or mice chewing their way though everything. What if I die and some swindler offers my familily like $500 for the whole shebang when that won't even cover my Saturn collection?
I know to get the most money I should sell on ebay or amazon, but I don't have the time to take the pictures, write the ad, pack/ship. I could sell on craigslist but I never seem to have much luck with that, then you deal with pepole no showing up. So I could trade into private game stores but they don't give you nearly what its worth.
Eh, whatever, dont ranting. I'm wondering if any of you ever had to make a serious choice about your game collection?
