I've never been able to get into football video games, not even this one. Tecmo Bowl in the arcade did draw my attention for a bit with it's two screen wide cabinet and short, squatty characters. But that's it.

NFL Blitz was an over-the-top football game in the style of NBA Jam that was released in arcades in 1997, as well as every system in existence at the time, including the Gameboy Color. Featuring quick, fun, outrageous gameplay and a good sense of humor, it was a hit at the time, spawning a lot of sequels, and I believe a new entry in the series is coming soon.
I first played it on the N64 with my roommate in San Francisco. It was a lot of fun, and the games were quick, short, and without the anxiety of Madden. It was comic action at its best. Players could even be "on fire" like NBA Jam, if they have successive plays, getting powered up. I remember players "on fire" running for the endzone while dragging two or three defensive players from their bodies. Pretty funny.
The best part of the game was the comic announcer doing the play by play. I remember for instance if you used a stiff-arm move, he would say "It's the stiffy!"
With E.A. having a stranglehold on football games for so long, alternatives to Madden have been in short supply. The result has been year after year of subpar Madden games. But back in the day we also had 2K games and NFL Blitz, and it was a football fan's dreams come true.
