Syberia

Syberia for the XBOX was one of the games I picked up in my vacation buying spree. It's an adventure game written by Benoit Sokal. It came out in 2002 originally as a PC game. It was later ported to PS2,XBOX,DS,and now is on iOS. The two things I like most about this game are the storyline and visuals. Has some action, but a lot of exploration and puzzles as well. The heroine of the game is an American lawyer named Kate Walker. She travels to a remote French village to finalize the takeover of a toy factory.

Kate is quite the intrepid explorer. She goes all over Central and Eastern Europe in the course of the game. Her main mode of transport is a clockwork locomotive driven by Oscar, who is a man-like robot that is fond of protocol[a protocol droid? Who needs that?] and is rather fussy. But there is also a part where she travels by airship. Many devices in the game are powered by springs and wind-up gears. So there is a steampunk element that I really like.

Some of the environments are simply amazing. Such a great visual style to this one. There is a subplot to the game involving Kate's rapidly deteriorating relationship with her fiance. Ironically a lot of that happens via cell phone. Not so steampunk there! There was a sequel to this game in 2004,Syberia II,which took the visuals to even higher levels. It has been announced there will be a third game in 2014. Not sure which consoles will have it,though. Overall I'm very happy with it since I only paid 6 bucks. If you like less combat oriented adventure games, you might try it.

Did someone say combat? Are there some dirty pirates who need to be slaughtered? No...oh bollocks, then! Strange how when I was searching for images of Kate images of Lara kept popping up. Don't know why,as Syberia is nothing like Tomb Raider at all. Especially the new Tomb Raider, which is sort of like playing Gears Of War at times. Sometimes I miss the mechanics of the older Tomb Raider games, where you did more exploring and less butchering. Syberia is that kind of game. One that gives you a sense of wonder at your surroundings. I feel like something special has been left behind with the Tomb Raider franchise. Still love it,though.

What I'm listening to today.........

I played a little bit of Siberia. I remember being wowed by the graphics but getting bored with the gameplay. It seemed like Mist with it's inscrutable puzzles. However, I do like the concept of these types of games and may pull it out again to give it another go.

It does get slow at times. Feels good to me after the frantic pace of most modern games I've been playing, though. Just get worn out from all the shooting and want to slow it down a bit.

Nice thing about Syberia is that it gives you all the info you need to solve the puzzles if you're paying attention.

That it does. I don't get frustrated by it like I do by other games with tricky puzzles. It gives you the clues you need in a sensible manner.

One of their early, almost[!] metal tunes. Wish they had played it when I saw them here last year. Fantastic show, but they are always good.

I loved this game. The sequel not so much. The story pulled me in and didn't let go, and I enjoyed how all you needed to solve the puzzles was right there, you just had to look for it. I think I only had to resort to gamefaqs once, and it was one of those "duh!" moments. The second game is worth playing for the story, but many of the screens are just visual - nothing to interact with, and leave you wondering what you've missed. Also, many of the puzzles seemed to have devolved into trial-and-error rather than giving you the necessary info so you could solve them. If you get the second game, use a walk-through and just enjoy the game for the story.

I'm sure I will get the sequel. I'm enjoying this game quite a bit so I have to see the story as it progresses. Thank God for Gamefaqs,it has saved my bacon a time or two.

I haven't been into these types of games for awhile but I bet I'll come back to them at some point. It's funny I veered away from this genre because as a kid I loved games like Maniac mansion,Shadowgate, and Monkey Island.

You are right about Syberia's visuals. It looks gorgeous! I especially took notice of Kate's steampunk robot companion. Class all the way!

I only recently got into steampunk stories and artwork. Now I tend to snatch up anything remotely steampunk. Bioshock Infinite is a prime example.

This sounds a lot like Myst to me, when it first came out. Gorgeous, but not combat-oriented, definitely more about the puzzles. Of course, this one apparently gives you adequate clues; maybe it's cause I was still really young at the time, but Myst just frustrated me, and I never did figure out where to go.

I've never even heard of Syberia before. Sounds like it would be cool to play though and the graphics are pretty good for it's era!
