Games Beaten

-River City Girls (Switch)

The devs obviously love the Kunio-kun series and had a blast making this game. The story and characters are surprisingly funny and enjoyable. I looked forward to anytime the girls talked to someone. The game is on the hard side and some locked fights are too long but there is a nice variety to your moves. Money can be too hard to come by. But perseverance got us through eventually each time and overall I really enjoyed it. The pixel art, luscious animations, and music are all very well done. Great for co-op.

-Shantae and the Pirate's Curse (Switch)

Shantae and the Pirate's Curse

Pirate's Curse continues the excellence of the previous Shantae games but everything has been stepped up a notch. The pixel art and animations are excellent and the islands are wonderfully varied. The music is the best yet and the characters are as delightful as ever. The story is mostly silly (some great meta humor) but has some serious moments too. The map is much improved. At times it's too vague about what you should do next but that's my only real complaint. Great game.

-God Eater 3 (PS4)

I've seen the credits roll now but there is still a bunch to do. On the whole it seems like a slightly more accessible take on the GE franchise, despite all the various systems, but there is still plenty of depth. It's still Monster Hunter lite with anime DRAMA, though the story did not intrigue me as much this time. Like MH, I think it's great with friends but a little bit of a slog solo. It looks so much better than past entries! The music is also excellent.

Games Bought

After my HUGE month of purchases in May, June was downright sedate. We downloaded Castle Crasher Remastered (Switch) for my kids. I haven't played this game since the Xbox 360 days and we never did finish it, so I'd love to do that sometime now. I got Sushi Striker: Way of the Sushido (3DS) just the other day. It's an action puzzle game that I have heard so much good stuff about. It's also available on the Switch, but I've heard that stylus control for this game is definitely the way to go. Rounding out the whole month is Call of Duty: WWII (PS4) on PS+. I'm surprised how many unplayed CoD games I have in the ol' backlog now. And that's it! That was June.

Games Being Played (this has got to be some kind of record for me using so many different consoles at once)

-Astral Chain (Switch)

Astral Chain

Finally started this game. I'm in the midst of the first real mission after the tutorial.

-God Eater 3 (PS4)

Into the post-game missions! I think there's another 40 or so to go.

-Kirby and the Rainbow Curse (Wii U)

I'm in the middle of World 5. I think there are 7 worlds.

-Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions Evolved (XBO)

I'm at the second to last boss in the single-player Adventure Mode.

-Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Switch)

Got my house expanded to the point of having a second floor (just missing the basement). Now I'm trying to fill it with some sense of cohesion to all my random crap.

-Destiny 2 (PS4)

The new expansion for the fall sounds really cool!

River City Girls is very good, but also very hard.  I haven't beaten it yet.  I enjoyed Streets of Rage 4 more as it was more approachable for me.  And I had so much fun playing it with my brother Jeff.  We would gang up on bad guys and 'baby duck' them.  That's a phrase we came up with, and if you want an idea what it means, watch the 'baby duck' episode of Regular Show.

Aside from the orignal GBA game, Shantae and the Pirate's Curse is my favorite.  I just reviewed Shantae and the Seven Sirens and it's a lot like Pirate's Curse, just a little bit easier.  Not that I'm complaining about that.

The platforming challenges in the final dungeon of Pirate's Curse were no joke! Looking forward to playing Seven Sirens eventually.

I wish I could have more than two systems hooked up at once. I love jumping around from console to console.

I really want a 3DS again.

I know there are a lot of reasons people have to purge or thin their game collections but I'm glad I have not had to do that. Also, earlier this year we got a new TV with four HDMI ports instead of two. So much better! HDMI splitters never work very well and having just two things hook up is so restrictive.

I always regret it when I purge stuff from my collection, so I try not to anymore. I need a house with a room set aside for gaming so I can justify filling the room with consoles.

I was so excited for River City Girls until you said it was hard and Cary said he liked SoR4 more ... cause I bought SoR4 after discovering how much I love SoR2 and ... meh.

Well, I can't weigh in on River City Girls vs Streets of Rage 4, but you can grind for levels in RCG, so theoretically you could power through it given enough time.

Ah ... hmm ...

I'd like to play River City Girls but the difficulty makes me hesitate.

I've always wanted to get into the Shantae games. They look like a lot of cute fun.

My nephews used to play Castle Crashers on Xbox when they visited. Ah, when they were young and innocent!

I think if you go into River City Girls with proper expectations (you're not going to mindlessly plow through it), you could have a good time, especially if you can find someone skilled to play with. Wishlist it and I'm sure it will go on sale eventually.

Pirate's Curse is a great entry point into the Shantae series, I think. I heartily recomment it.

Astral Chain is amazing! I was able to beat it last year, one of my favorite Switch games. The story is bizarre, but the combat is so good.

Also, how are you liking Kirby & Rainbow Curse? That's a game I've been wanting to pick up.

I really wanted to play Astral Chain last year but the second half of the year was so swamped for me. I've beaten the first big boss so far and really enjoying it. I'm glad Nintendo and Platinum have such a good relationship.

Did you play Kirby Canvas Curse for the DS? It's more of that with a nice clay aesthetic. I find I grow a little bored if I play too many levels in a row but a couple at a time is great. It's just so different from everything else.
