Guns Don't Kill People, Video Games Kill People

Guys, I'm sorry to have to say this, but I'm giving up video games.

I was wrong.

I was wrong to enjoy this vile, wretched excuse for entertainment.  I was wrong to spend hours of my time virtually murdering people.  And I take back any claims I've made about this "murder, rape, and necrophilia simulator" being capable of providing art and genuinely enriching the lives of people.  I was wrong.

What possible reason could there be for this change of heart, you ask?  This woman.

At roughly the four-minute mark, Jeanine Pirro states that video games and movies are more responsible for terrorism than weapons are.  At the time, thinking I was a sane, rational individual, I questioned this line of reasoning.  I thought something similar to what you readers are probably thinking right now.  How can a form of entertainment be more instrumental in the death of countless hundreds of people than actual instruments of death?  I thought that was like saying "my stove doesn't cook food, Master Chef does."

If you want to read the rest, please give me your credit card details, bank account and pin number, address, and all of your belongings. Alternatively, you could just click this link. That works too I guess.

"One, in video games, you are not literally shooting at people.  What you are shooting at is a series of 0's and 1's that are organized into a 2-dimensional representation of a 3-dimensional....  Fuck it." Bahahahaha best comeback ever. Actually some of the annotations in that GTA video are fucking priceless too.

What sort of legislation could the government even put into place?  What would become of the violent videogames that I currently own?  Why do I want to punch this lady in the face?  So many unanswered questions.

Video games aren't going to be banned. A new form of entertainment will come along sometime soon and everyone will freak out about that. Video games will be saved!

Videogames are the real issue, not physical and verbal abuse as a child, or mental instability, or a lousy homelife.  It's videogames, how stupid of me.  I better go home and burn all of mine in the backyard.  That way I won't have to worry about going out and killing people.

Jeanine is hawt! Imma gonna put her likeness in my sex simulator and have imaginary unreal sex with her stand-in pixelated facsimile!

....Then she'll bring up charges of "real" sexual harassment. lol.

My favourite part of her speech is when she talks about how taking away guns is taking away our freedom... but she wants video games banned?

I've heard the crazy ones are hot in the sack! Sadly that guy who gave me said advice went missing after leaving with a girl from a BDSM club. I suspect the police will find his body handcuffed to a bed any day now!

Politicians always blab about freedom whilst trying to take it away from us. Where have you been, amigo? lol.

Filthy aussies! Go back to drinking your better alcoholic beverages! I bet you ride a kangeroo into work too! (narrows eyes)

Hey, we only ride our kangaroos when we've had a few too many alcoholic beverages and think we can create a super race.

That's how video game characters can double jump...

Great article Blake. I guess when GTA 5 comes out society will totally collapse. We all know that games will bring about the end of civilization. I think I'll have to give up retro gaming too. Even those old games are ticking time bombs. I bet Pong was some elaborate brain washing device meant to turn young people into mindless killing machines. Surprised

Pong was developed by the Chinese Military to turn Americans Asian. It is an evil force and must be stopped!

There are five grand theft autos? Oh god, this truly is the end of days!!!! Also, glad you liked it Aaron. How are you enjoying Terraria?

I haven't played it too much yet. I'll let you know when I do or just write something about it. It seems like it would be fun.

God made us to kill the turtles, and the other animals, and even people when the government says it's ok.

All she said was that lunatic was doing before he killed thoughs kids she didnt blame the games for what happened she just said what he was doing prior to killing, i may be the lone ranger on this respect and keep in mind i dont own a gun, but if i want one its my second amendment to own one and as far as blaming video games there is people who do it, but i didnt see that from her and thats my Opinion.

She has mentioned a ton of times that she wants video games banned. I saw that on Kotaku and thought "So?" but looking back at some of the other stuff she said... yeah she doesn't like them. I don't own a gun, and I think me saying "guns are evil, ban them" would be like an outsider saying video games are evil. Anyway, that video inspired the article, it wasn't necessariyl about it.

Yea I know but as an NRA rightsMember,I dont want to get the two mixed and my big problem with this is if guns were to get banned, Violent video games will be next and i dont think we shiuld suffer cause some nut job, got a gun and was playing call of duty before he decided to assault a primary school, the problems nit with games and guns its with people who do not get the proper mental health screenings who loose there head and do the unthinkable, this is a touchy subject for me, as i know some of the familysnwhi lost there babies that day, and banning games and guns is ludacris,And this women even though shes a NRA activist, shes also a Hypocrypt saying dont ban guns but ban video games, is kinda like the pot calling the kettle black if you ask me.

Oh and i was refering to this video not her personally cause i do know she is against violent video games oh and Im sorry for making it a political thing that wasnt what i was aiming for.

Yeah, I chose that video because it came out recently, and wanted to give it a bit of topicality. I should have put a few of her other videos in there to show clearly what I was getting at. Btw, my argument wasn't against guns. I was saying that a gun owner saying video games causes violence is ridiculous.

While I'm not usually a fan of Kotaku, they are known to run the occasionally good article.  Ben Kuchera from Penny Arcade Report linked to this, another entry into the "holy crap games are scary and make people violent" category which is unfortunately never not scary to some folks.

Oh, and I'll proudly admit to being a pro-gun American (as in, I like shooting them and would like to have one or more) who completely hates the NRA and all of their agitprop and shenanigans.

I'm not anti or pro guns. I live in Australia where they aren't as popular as America, so I can't really weigh in on the subject. I feel my thoughts would be the same as Jack Thompson's, someone who really doesn't know what he's talking about, who may feel he has the best intentions, but is pretty ignorant about the subject.

Yeah, Kotaku is one of my least favourite gaming sites. Rock Paper Scissors is probably my favourite, along with giantbomb and pc gamer. IGN are a mixed bag, in that some of their content is atrocious and some of it is actually quite great.

If Hollywood and videogames are training people to become killing machines as she says, then i'm made of cheese. Hey!, don't look at me like that, if she says that's the truth, then that means i'm saying the truth that i'm made of cheese.

I'm going to be a bit controversial now and admit to something, the second video in that link where he discusses GTA has a point. Popular culture is desensitising to violence, not to everybody but children in particular do suffer from this. What angers me the most is quite frankly naive and dumb parenting. GTA clearly holds an 18 certificate, as does call of duty and countless other games. It's an 18 for a reason, because it contains mature themes and graphic content. Even go back to Resident Evil 2 on the PS1 and it has a warning at the beginning of the game about the gore contained therein. Certain measures are taken, i.e. cartoons do not usually show real guns anymore (think 90's animated batman with the tommy guns where as now many of his incarnations show laser guns) but where video games are concerned parents are massively under-educated. Most parents would not allow their kids to watch an 18 certificate horror flick, so why let your kids grusomely kill people in a video game like God of War! I used to find the film 'The Terminator' teffifying when I was a kid, but many children that I teach state they enjoyed Hostel, a type of film I still can't watch. Too many parents are lazy and harm like this can be avoided by folowing one simple principle: Take an interest in what your children do! follow that with common sense like don't allow kids to have game systems and PC's with internet connection in their bedrooms and you have a winner. Games don't kill people, lack of support and education from the most influencial teachers you will ever have, your parents, do. Of course some people despite the best upbringing in the world will turn bad  but I'd bet a lot of money in that number being reduced if parents would do their bloody job properly.

I honestly think it has more to do with maturity than age. At the age of 10, I was reading Stephen King, that's just what level of maturity I was at. I played Silent Hill at a youngish age, and I think I handled it ok, and turned into a fairly well adjusted adult. My brother, on the other hand, couldn't really cope with mature themes as well as I could, so my parents didn't allow him to watch the same stuff as I could, even when he reached the age I was allowed to watch them at. Parents need to know their kids, and put some goddamn effort in.

Chunopo

05/08/2013 at 03:22 AM

Yeah you're right there, maturity does play a big part in it, your parents sound savvy enough to make the right kind of calls. My folks were pretty strict over this stuff too, but like you they taught me the kind of things you don't always learn in school.
