I rented the PS2 remake you mention, but it was pretty tough as I recall.
Mythical - Rygar

Rygar was an action game released for the NES in 1986, based on an arcade game. I liked it at the time, and played it a bunch... it was pretty unique in some ways, and had great music. It had a really neat mythical world too... and kind of nonlinear. I never beat it, but I got up to the last boss one day. Unfortunately, he destroyed me, and I'm not sure if I ever played the game again.
But when I was a kid, I found the game fascinating. I remember the caves you could enter where the giant, bearded sages would give you hints to upcoming puzzles. Those always filled me with wonder.
It definitely wasn't quite like all the other action games, and Rygar had an interesting weapon that was sort of like a yo-yo, and some of the enemies required unusual techniques to defeat them. Thinking back now, I wish I could play it again. I don't know if it's on Switch Online, but I would try it again if it is.
There was actually a PS2 remake released in 2002, which has 83% Metacritic review, but I've never played it.
