I never had a SNES. Not even when I was collecting consoles in the late nineties with my roommate. I got a Genesis soon after launch, and was a Sega fanboy after that. I loved my Genesis. So I didn't pay much attention to the SNES when it came out. I would play SNES at friends' houses and I enjoyed its games, but I never considered getting one myself. I was getting older then, and in high school, so video games weren't really so important to me anymore, other than Madden.
So I missed out on Yoshi's Island when it was released for the SNES in 1995. I didn't play it until the late nineties when emulation was a thing and I downloaded every 16-bit game in existence. Of course, when you have every 16-bit game in existence, you don't spend a lot of time playing just one.
But I really got into Yoshi's Island when it was released in its GBA version with the 3DS "Ambassador" program. I played it a lot, actually, and really enjoyed it. It's a fun, not too tough, beautiful game, with adorable characters. It's interesting that Nintendo made this game instead of a normal Super Mario World sequel, but I think it was a good choice.
I'm sure it turned off some people, and I don't think it had the sales Super Mario World did, but I think it's nearly as good. Plus, it started Yoshi on his spin-off journeys, which continue to this day.
