Prototype is an open-world action game released by Activision in June of 2009 for PS3 and Xbox 360. The player takes on the role of an amnesiac with somewhat grotesque shapeshifting super powers as he battles monsters and shadowy government forces. It was well-reviewed and well-received, but a bit overshadowed by Sony's Infamous, another open-world superhero game released a month prior.

I never played this, but I watched my brother play a good bit of it. I clearly remember him hovering in the air above a city, pummeling an attack helicopter with his fists. Maybe that didn't really happen, but that's the way I remember it, and I'm sticking to it.

I guess this was before the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe and the plethora of superhero stories that have taken over our culture, so it definitely satisfied an urge that wasn't found elsewhere. The game did well, and there was a sequel released in 2012, but it had a black protagonist this time, which is never a good idea when you're trying to sell games to adolescent white boys.

The franchise has been dormant for a while now, but I think with the right developer, someone could make something cool out of it.

I watched my friend play this a ton. I remember wanting top play it and inFamous at the time, but I didn't get to either of them.

My brother played Infamous too, and he liked that better. But Infamous is a bigger, more polished, AAA game.

Love the Prototype games because it was like a weird superhero that you could upgrade, and learn new powers. I think during this time I played this game, that one game on PS3 where you could control electricity, and the cop game on 360 where you could upgrade your cop and he could run up the sides of buildings. All three were my anti superhero games.
