I remember EGM loving it, and you saying it's action combat but otherwise like KOTOR has me intrigued yet again.
KOTOR 3? - Jade Empire

Jade Empire, Bioware's follow-up game to Knights of the Old Republic (Obsidian developed KOTOR 2), was released exclusively to Xbox in 2005. It was soon after released on PC, and then Mac, and then about a decade later, released on mobile devices. Jade Empire is an action-RPG that takes place in a magical world inspired by Chinese fairytales and fantasy stories, an original IP that Bioware deliberately chose after dealing with the restrictions of the Star Wars property with KOTOR. Like other Bioware games, it features deep storytelling with extensive dialogue and moral choices.
I never beat this game. I played about five hours into it though. Other than the action-based combat, it's very similar to KOTOR, and for this reason, every time I've played it I felt that it's sort of - metaphorically - KOTOR 3. There's the story of a warrior training to be a master in a world of good or evil choices, party members to collect and romance, and a deep world peopled by interesting characters. It's a game design that Bioware would go on to use with Mass Effect and Dragon Age, but even though this game is old now, there are a lot of aspects of it that are timeless.
The combat is inspired by Chinese martial arts novels and movies (like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon). It's a step up, in my opinion, from KOTOR's combat, but it's not very deep. It's fun, but it's no Tales game.
I bought it again when it was released on iPad, but I haven't played it yet. I've been thinking about it a lot lately though. However, I'm planning on getting a new, bigger phone later this year, and I might wait until then to try this again.
