Brothers In Arms: The Road to Hill 30 is a first-person, squad-based tactical WW2 shooter released for Xbox, PC, and PS2 in 2005. It was later ported to the Wii in 2008. Players are tasked with the command of a small squad of soldiers as they take on Nazis (some levels you get control of a tank instead). Commands are intuitive, and you can order your squad members to lay down suppressive fire, find cover, charge, and flank the enemy. Brothers in Arms has been a succesful franchise, with about ten games across both consoles, portable devices, and mobile devices using Android and iOS operating systems.

There aren't a ton of squad-based tactical 1st-person shooters out there, but it's a genre I greatly enjoy. Some of them are more complex than others, but there have been some big budget titles like Mass Effect and Rainbow Six that really excel with these mechanics.

I rented Road to Hill 30 when it came out, and played it nonstop during the time I had with it, but I've never owned one of the games in the franchise. Like I said, it's a genre I really like, and it really provides a different experience than the typical run-and-gun gameplay of most 1st person shooters. However, due to the complexity of these types of games, and because they often are difficult if you try to play them like normal shooters, they aren't the most popular genre, and as a result don't justify big AAA budgets.

But games like this scratch an itch like other games can't.

I remember this game. It was supposedly designed by disgruntled Call of Duty designers, while Call of Duty was designed by disgruntled Medal of Honor designers. I was probably looking forward to Dragon Quest 8 at the time. Hard to believe it's been 13 years. And I think Matt Baker was based on a real WWII vet.

I think I've heard that too. Yeah, this was a pretty good game. Not DQ8 good though!

I really liked this series back when it was out. I used to own several of them too. I was surprised to learn later that Gearbox Software did these before Borderlands.

yeah this was a neat spin at a time when WW2 shooters were the biggest games.

I distinctly remember my friend Mark and I playing all sorts of WWII FPS games at the time. Brothers in Arms was something different. I enjoyed the tactical aspects of it.
