You know, it's too bad you don't have an Xbox. I think you would really like that Xbox subscription service. Then you could pick and choose what you wanted to try, and if you didn't like it, you could just delete it.
Those Who Remain

Not sure I would have rented this otherwise, but I do like surprise games I didn't really hear much about from GameFly.
It's effectively creepy in several places and I like the conceit of the story.
However, the main character sounds bored in situations where he really shouldn't (or maybe he has a psyche of steel and is afraid of nothing, I dunno) while trying to hard to scream me into a jump scare at others. This is the least of my complaints, since I can also be a bit monotone in situations where others are scared, so maybe he's just reacting how I do to scary movies.
The most unfortunate part is while I liked searching around for clues and solving puzzles in alternate dimensions and such, this mostly walking sim tries to be an actual game at points it really doesn't have the chops to pull off. Going the way of something like EveryBody's Gone to the Rapture, Firewatch, and/or What Remains of Edith Finch but with a horror atmosphere would have been perfect. Too bad there are enemies who run at you and force you into stealth in a world where it's intentionally made hard for you to see, your character isn't exactly Mr. Marathon, and the controls can be fairly finnicky, which is especially annoying when there are random objects in your way.
I got I think about halfway through and decided I'm going to send it back and watch the rest on YouTube. If you're super curious, it is apparently a very short - five or six hour - game, but that is assuming you have a lot more patience than I do for its checkpoints that don't seem to keep track of what you've already done before being caught by one of the running monsters I mentioned.
Don't take my word for it. This IGN review is pretty much exactly how I feel, in video form and delivered by a man with an Australian accent:
Sometimes less is more, and game developers should note this. Anyway, back to my four-hour watch of the anime bullshit that is Guilty Gear Xrd's story mode and my epic 60-hour adventure of Yakuza: Like a Dragon.
