Games of the Decade: Expansion Pass #30/Blog a Day #1

Hello everyone, how are you?

I feel like video games based on licensed properties have come a long way. A great example of this is the Batman Arkham games and the recent Spider-man games from Playstation. It goes to show you that there are companies out there who will treat a property with love and respect and in turn deliver a great product. One such company is PlatinumGames and the property that they treated with love and respect is Transformers and the game they gave us? None other than Transformers: Devastation.

Transformers Devastation

The music in this game is really amazing

I remember being excited when this was first announced. One thing I loved was how the game looked, it looked just like the Transformers Generation 1 cartoon from back in the day. That was insane. That and and they got all the voice actors who are still alive to reprise the roles of the characters they voiced in the cartoon. They went the whole extra mile.

Except I never got around to picing it up. I had a PS3 at the time and while the game did release on the PS3 I just never got around to getting it there. I got a PS4 late 2017 and I had little to no games on the system, outside of Arkham Knight. I then learned that Activision was delisting several of their games from digital storefronts, all their icensed games including this one due to their licensing deal expiring. So I quickly went to Amazon and ordered a PS4 copy of the game while it was still cheap. It was under $20 brand new so I got, but how was the game?

The game opens with the Insecticons and some giant metal claws invading and swarming New York or a city that looks like it, panic ensues of course. Optimus Prime, along with Bumblebee Wheeljack, Sideswipe, and Grimlock arrive on the scene to see what is going on, only to find out that Megatron and his Decepticons are behind this as usual. But there is more going on that meets the eye.

Transformers Devastation

                                                Thanks for the warm welcome

Transformers: Devastation features 5 playable characters: Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Sideswipe, Wheeljack, and Grimlock, Each of them play differently and they all have their advantages and disadvantages as well as having their own abilitites, stats, and whatnot. You can choose whoever fits your playstyle the most or whoever you prefer. I definitely feel like the roster could of used more variety.

If you've played any game by PlatinumGames then you know what to expect when it comes to how the game plays. The gameplay is really fast-paced and incredibly fluid. You have your basic attacks and you can chain up combos and perform special moves. One thing I really love it that you can transform into your vehicle form at will at any time and they even incorporated attacks into that as well so it actually made it really useful and integral to the gameplay. You can even use a gun if you want but the aiming for that isn't that smooth though.

The characters look incredible, I love the attention to detail that they did for each of the characters. Honestly it's like watching an episode of the cartoon, except that you are in control of the characters. The environments look just as great but they can get repetitive since you will be revisiting a number of them multiple times during the story. I wish they had more variety though.

Transformers Devastation

Megatron must be stopped. No matter the cost.

"But Captain N, where can I play this game?" Sadly the game is hard to come by since it was delisted from digital storefronts in late 2017. All versions of the game. Physical copies may be hard to find at a decent price new, but if you don't mind used then they are affordable in that condition. There was dlc that was delisted as well, but they are just basically reskins of the Autobots you use so nothing really important that you are missing out on.

Final Thoughts: Transformers: Devastation is a fun game but it isn't without its share of flaws though. I feel like the roster could of been better, at least 2-3 more playale characters would of been fine. It's a crime that you can't play as the Decepticons. I imagine it would of been more fun to play as them, if only to see Megatron and Starscream bicker with each other. And the game can get repetitive in both the environments and gameplay.

You can clearly tell that the game wasn't give enough time or money. I feel like if the game had both of those then the game would of turned out better, It isn't perfect but I love it. Outside of Wind Waker, this is definitely the next game that I've played that makes great use of the cel-shaded look. It's basically the cartoon but now you can play through it. This game has my favorite artstyle on the PS4 since there is no other game like it. But I still love it despite the flaws, this game was mostly intended for fans of the franchise, and I feel that they got their intended target audience for the most part. Even if the game didn't get enough time, they really respected and stayed true to the source material and I love them for that. I hope we do get a sequel eventually since the ending hints that.

Transformers Devastation

Couldn't have said it better myself

Sometimes looking good isn't simply enough, hope you are also feeling good as well. Take some time for yourselves because you deseve to and care of yourselves. Especially in these times of uncertainty. Hang on to your deams everyone. The future is built on dreams. Hang on.

So that's it for the first post of the Expansion Pass and the very first official BaD post of the month and site. Not a bad start, I think, but we are just getting started so there is more to come. Next time we'll be rolling around at the speed of sound for the upcoming post so stay tuned. I'll see you later and remember...

I remember hearing good things about this game and if I had any Transformer nostalgia, I might have picked it up. Too many good games. I like the art style.

I need to finish this one, but if it was delisted in 2017 ... I'm not sure I kept it downloaded.

I'm only a passing Transformers fan but the combination of cel-shaded art and Platinum Games makes me want to play this. So annoying it's hard to get now.

I think I played this on Steam. I love old fashioned transformers.

I liked that Transformers Devastation was based on the old cartoon, but gameplay wise I actually liked Transformers: Fall of Cybertron more.  I'm not even a big fan of Gears of War style third person shooters and I played through all of that one, that's how much I liked it.
