Battle Shark Battle Shark Arcade Cabinet

Released: 1989

Pitch: Shoot ships, planes, and mines from your submarine.

Battle Shark plays from a first person perspective. The game looks very nice for 1989 but there is very little movement to the big sprites. They mostly just float across the screen shooting at you. Your ability to shoot is interesting because it's limited. Your ammo slowly refills, so you have to make strategic decisions of when to shoot rather than spamming the field with shots. This limitation is also the most "cheap arcade" aspect of the game, because the later levels throw so much at you that you can't possibly live through it all (you can shoot enemy projectiles with your own, but then you won't be hurting the bad guys or boss). In the end the game doesn't have much depth, despite be a submarine game.

Battle Shark Subtank

You know, one of those common crab-themed submersible tanks

I kind of remember this one, but I think I passed up on it in the arcades.  Too many other things to spend my quarters on.

It had a fancy cabinet and good graphics for the time. There's really no reason to recommend it now.

I like those arcade cabinets with the periscope controllers.

Battle Shark sounds like an EXTREME 90s TV show, but it still makes sense as an '89 game.
