Continental Circus

Released: 1987

Pitch: Grand Prix racing around the world.

This is one of those fancy racing games from the days of crazy sprite scaling. Personally, I've never cared much for games like this but its faux 3D is still impressive for 1987. The tracks not only curve but the landscape goes up and down as well. You have to worry about when to use low and high gear and must get to a pit stop if your car gets damaged. Hitting the checkpoints extends your time, and you must make a certain place to qualify for the next race. Impressive, but not fun for very long, in my opinion.

It looks cool, but I can still play Super Hang On! in Yakuza.

I think Taito's most popular racing series is probably Chase H.Q.  They should make a Taito character kart racer!

The only racing game I really liked from this era was Spy Hunter.
