Elevator Action

Released: 1983

Pitch: Navigate a world of elevators, escalators, and gun-wielding spies.

Believe it or not, this was my first time playing Elevator Action and it was a pleasant experience. You play a spy that starts at the top of a building and has to work his way to the bottom, collecting several important documents hidden behind red doors. The building is swarming with enemy spies who won't hesitate to shoot you. You can move laterally, duck, jump, and shoot and while the controls are a little stiff, the game came out in '83. It simply feels of the time. The building layout is lightly randomized, so no two runs feel quite the same. I had a good time. At this point I'm just disappointed that this collection does not include any of the sequels.

As a kid I didn't play Elevator Action much because I wasn't very good at it, and I tended to spend what few quarters I had in the arcade on games I was good at.  More bang for your buck, you know? It wasn't a bad game, just harder for Little Cary to grasp.

I did, however, really like Elevator Action Returns.  It's on one of the Taito collections.  If it's one the collection you've got, I hope you get to play it!  It's awesome!

Have you ever heard of the latest game in the series?  It's called Elevator Action: Death Parade and it's an arcade light gun game similar to Time Crisis.  But you get extra buttons to open and close an elevator door, and buttons to choose floors.  What's cool is that when the doors close, it's an actual physical pair of elevator doors that block the screen!  It surprised me at first when it happened!  You can even use the elevator doors as shields, too!  I played it once at Round 1 arcade.

The name of your character in the orginal game is Secret Agent Otto.  He actually appears as a helper character in Arkanoid vs. Space Invaders, along with other Taito stars like Bub & Bob and even Time Gal!

Dude! That light gun game sounds neat. I'll probably never see it in real life but if I do... Laughing

I do have the second Taito Legends collection, so I assume Elevator Action Returns is on there. I'll looking forward to trying it!

I never saw this in the arcade. I like the way the lights go out but you can just barely make out when a door opens and a spy enters the floor.

I've heard that the sequel is really great, that's a game I would love to play, but I would also like this probably as well.

Never heard of this and now I'm just sad I won't be getting any elevator action.
