I THINK I remember this one. It was made probably in response to Capcom hit shooters like Section Z, Side Arms, and Forgotten Worlds. It must've not been very good if it doesn't stick out in my mind, though. I mostly just remember the title.

Exzisus
Released: 1987
Pitch: Destroy enemies as you fly over the surface of an infested planet.
Exzisus is a side-scrolling shmup and I don't particularly like it. Your player character is quite large and flies oriented up and down, making you a large target. You can get a power up that turns you into a sleek ship—that should have been the whole game, not a power up—but it doesn't come around very often. Bad guys will come unexpectedly from the back of the screen and most of them fire tiny little bullets. It's not all bad. The game is pretty nice in the graphics and sound department and I like that you can land and run on the ground, for whatever that is worth. But as a game of this genre, I'm recommending a hearty SKIP.
I never saw this particular boss. Getting there would have been too painful.
