Game: Jersey Devil (PS1, Win/1997-98)
Mascot for: Megatoon Studios/Sony
Jersey Devil is a strange bat-like creature who is an anti-hero (or perhaps one of those dark superheroes like Batman or Daredevil). He goes on a mission to stop Dr. Knarf, who is terrorizing the city of Jersey with his mutant vegetables. This 3D platformer is derivative of the time, with JD attacking enemies, collecting pumpkins, and using his gliding ability to reach new areas. The environments are all horror-themed places (crypts, mansion, toxic factory, etc.). Every now and then, there is some voice acting, although (surprisingly) JD never speaks.
What happened: Apart from an excellent orchestral soundtrack, JD doesn't have much going for it. The game's not awful, but it's all "been there, done that." By this point, Playstation already had Crash Bandicoot and Spyro as recognizable mascots, and their games were far more interesting than JD. The character of JD was generic, looking like a wannabe Looney Toons character; the gameplay was generic too. And so, JD was a flop right out of the gate. Crash and Spyro are still around today, but that old Jersey Devil died in the '90s.
