Balloon Bomber

Released: 1980

Pitch: Shoot and destroy balloon bombs dropped from a bi-plane.

Balloon Bomber feels like an even older game than it is. A bi-plane (I think it kind of looks like a helicopter) flies across the screen, releasing bombs on balloons. Rather than float to the ground, these bombs float sideways while swinging back and forth, maintaining their altitude. You control an anti-air gun that moves along the bottom of the screen. Your goal is to shoot all the bombs but if you shoot the balloon instead accidentally, the bomb will fall to the ground, destroying your gun if hit or blowing a hole in the ground that you then can't pass over. You can shoot the bomb as it falls but that gets increasingly difficult as the plane places the balloons lower and lower on the screen. This situation is exacerbated by the fact that the bombs will drop their own bombs randomly if left alone. As the ground is destroyed, you get more and more hemmed in, and it's possible to get killed by the blast of a bomb that you couldn't move over far enough to shoot as it fell. Rinse and repeat and there's the game!

I kind of liked Balloon Bomber.  It had a bit of strategy as you would try to shoot the bombs swinging around and not the balloons.  I also liked the derpy music they played in the background.  "Da-doop-a-doop, da-doop-a-doop."  On the PSP Taito collection Taito Memories, they updated a few of the games with better graphics and gameplay tweaks, and Balloon Bomber was one of the games they did that with, but they still kept the derpy music!

Sometimes simple old games can really shine with a modern update. I always loved the Game & Watch collections on Game Boy, for instance.

I liked this a little bit when I played it a while back. It is frustrating to be hemmed in with craters though.

Like a lot of games at the time, it feels like defeat is inevitable.
