Cameltry

Released: 1989

Pitch: Turn and tilt the maze to lead your ball to the goal.

Now this is an odd game. Imagine Super Monkey Ball from a top-down 2D perspective (and with camels instead of monkeys, I guess, though I only ever saw one on the title screen). You turn the whole playfield to guide a ball to the goal and the ball has much floatier physics that real life would. Your enemy here is time. There are plenty of obstacles to get in your way, they worst being blocks that cause you to lose time. The courses can be very twisty turny too! It's a fun game. There are three difficulty levels—Easy, Hard, and Very Hard—and I played and enjoyed the first two of those. My one ding against the game is that it made me feel slightly dizzy. All that spinning! But nothing too bad. Glad I tried it.

This video shows some weird things replacing the ball in some levels. I don't know what's up with that.

I can see myself getting nauseous playing this game. Much like LocoRoco did for me once.

I think this might be an Arcade Archives title.

I first learned about this game when they ported it to the SNES.  Back then the SNES game was called "On the Ball" in the US.  I always wanted to play it, since it had a Marble Madness vibe, but I never got to play the SNES version!  It was never at any game rental places near me, and I wasn't about to pay full price for it then.  So I'm glad it was on the Taito collection.

They sure made some strange naming choices back in the day, not that "Cameltry" isn't weird also. But yeah, I wouldn't want to pay full price for this game. It's a fun diversion though.
