Zelda games always have fantastic music, so picking one was difficult. For me, perhaps my favorite Zelda OST is Skyward Sword. Say what you will about the game, but the music is exceptional. Like Super Mario Galaxy, this game was the first fully orchestrated OST for the Zelda series, and the result is awesome. A big part of that was Mahito Yokota, who was the man behind the Galaxy soundtracks. He’s joined by three composers who had plenty of experience with music for other Nintendo franchises. The orchestral style has always fit the Zelda series perfectly, which is probably why this OST is so wonderful. Also, this OST is perhaps the most cinematic of any Zelda game, even Breath of the Wild. Here’s a few standouts.

Ballad of the Goddess

This theme is so perfect for a Zelda game. It’s well known that this is Zelda’s theme backwards, which is amazing that it works so well! It’s grand, sweeping, adventurous, hopeful, and inspiring. It’s quite cinematic as well due to excellent strings, brass, and light percussion that seem to resemble John Williams’ music. The ending climaxes perfectly as the trumpets blurt out successive notes to emphasize a grand finale. It’s simply perfect.

Girahnim’s Theme

Girahnim is a cool villain as he resembles a Joker-like character more than anyone we’ve seen in a Zelda game. He’s creepy and conniving, and so this thing matches that. It’s a bit unsettling. The instruments used are perfect—piano, tremolo strings, voices in the background, and of course, an organ. What’s cool is that a more exciting version of this theme plays when you fight Girahnim. He might not be everyone’s favorite villain, but he’s got a great villainous theme.

Skyloft

This theme is so relaxing and calming. It really gives off a homey feeling. The melody is carried by an accordion, which is simply beautiful. At 48 seconds a trombone comes in to take the melody momentarily, and then a flute takes over at 1’07”. There’s also a guitar backing up the main theme and a light timbrel. It’s such a calm song, if you’re stressed or tired, just take a moment to listen to this one and relax.

Moldarach

This is a boss theme, and it’s so great! Once again there is a cinematic feel to this, although some might complain that it sounds too similar to certain boss themes from the Mario Galaxy games. The trumpets are loud and intense, the strings are frantic, and the second half of the song emphasizes that feeling of dread. What’s really cool is how the strings slowly change notes at the end just before the song loops. I also love the bass piano that is constantly moving.

Staff Roll

Just like Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, which both had awesome staff rolls, Skyward Sword does not disappoint in that regard either. The grand opening is epic and thrilling, then everything slows down for a very calming section of the main theme. Things gradually crescendo and then seamlessly transition into the Legend of Zelda theme. I won’t cover the rest of the song, but it’s beautiful, and it culminates with an exciting ending. This song is something we would probably hear in a Zelda concert, so it’s a real treat to hear it in an actual OST.

I didn't think Skyward Sword was THAT bad.  I got the Switch version for my birthday but I haven't played it yet.  The orchestral music is very good here.  Around the time of the original game's release, there was a Zelda orchestral concert tour and my friend and I made a trip to Austin to see it.  That was very cool.  My favorite Zelda game is Link's Awakening.  Even that one has good music!

The 25th and 30th anniversary Zelda concerts are amazing! Zelda music lends itself perfectly to the orchestral style, much like Final Fantasy. Also, I don't think Skyward Sword is that bad either, it's just very linear, which is a shame.

My only big problem with Skyward Sword was that there really wasn't an overworld to explore.  Anytime you went down to the 'overworld' it was just a bunch of puzzles to solve, so it was like you're doing a dungeon before you get to the actual dungeon.

But then, it was one of those situations where Nintendo couldn't win.  If they went with a traditional overworld, people would've been like, "Oh, Nintendo is just playing it safe and doing the same thing again."  So they tried something different and people complained anyway.

Skyward Sword had lovely artistic flair as far as the visuals and the musicsl score, and great dungeon design, but it definitely had issues. The HD version rectifies a lot of these problems and even allows you to play with the Pro Controller if you don't want to use the Joycons. With the flaws mitigated, the many good qualities Skyward Sword has stand out more.

Yeah, I think overall the game is a good experience, and I hope more will play it now that the HD version is out.

I've always meant to play it. I believe I have a copy too.
