I don't think I have the patience to play through the Golden Axe games. I've tried them, but like you said, they're very dated. I remember playing Streets of Rage back in the Wii days when I got it for Virtual Console. It's a good game, and I feel that everyone tends to overlook it because SoR2 is such a huge improvement, but it's still a good game.

Games Beaten
-Golden Axe II (Genesis [PS4])
Golden Axe II is a typical beat-'em-up for its time. The characters are stiff but being able to double tap to run—combined with attacks and jumps—makes all the difference. Screen-clearing magic makes its return as well, of course. But it can still be cheap and they bring back early bosses as enemies later on. I hate it when these games do that. Now two at once! And now with a mob! Ugh. It's not bad, just dated.
-Golden Axe III (Genesis [PS4])
After the noticeable improvements Golden Axe II made over the original, I had high hopes for GAIII but I was largely let down. It does make some improvements, like a larger playable cast (I played the panther man!) and branching paths in the levels, but none of that alleviates how cheap it can be. About 3/4 of the way through I realized the combat isn't particularly that fun and by the end it was a chore. It's the best of the trilogy but...that's not saying that much :/
-Streets of Rage (Genesis [PS4])
I can't believe how much better this feels to play than the Golden Axe games. I wish the player character moved faster but fighting mobs feels fair. The same cannot be said for all the bosses (which do come back later as enemies, ugh) but they're not insurmountable. The sprite work is lovely and the tunes fit the game so well. This game is such a solid foundation for the Streets of Rage series.
Games Bought
Unlike the last few months, I did not take any of the PS+ games from May but I did grab something from the not-long-for-this-world 3DS eShop: Pocket Card Jockey! It is, of course, the solitaire/horse racing game from the creators of Pokémon. Hopefully I'll pick up a few more 3DS things before the shop closes permanently but this game is the one I really wanted to make sure I got. My physical copy of Axiom Verge 2 (Switch) also arrived from Limited Run Games. Another game I'd like to play right now that's going on the ol' backlog pile!
Now Playing
-Great Ace Attorney 2 (Switch)
I've been trying to play this game while also reading the third Dune book and I found those two things ate into the time for each other. Now that I've finished Children of Dune I am doubling down on this game. I just finished the fourth case—which ends not with the resolution of the court case but with a major character revelation—and I'm about to go into the big (and long) finale!
-Mario Super Picross (Super Famicom - Switch Online)
I'm well into Wario's puzzles now and this is the kind of picross I was expecting, with no immediate corrections if I mess up.
-Destiny 2 (PS4)
We've just started a new season and, supposedly, they have brought back my favorite PvP mode from Destiny 1: Rift! A ball spawns in the middle of the map and you have to grab it and run it to the other team's base. I don't know if they've made any significant changes to it for Destiny 2 but I'm excited to try it out!
-Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate (Switch)
We are getting deeper into G Rank quests and upgrading our armor. There are still new monsters popping up!
