Games Beaten
-Streets of Rage 2 (Genesis [PS4])
Streets of Rage 2 does not make any big changes but makes meaningful improvements. After accidentally doing a special move in level 1, I looked up how to do them and that really deepened the gameplay for me. By and large, fighting mobs feels fair and the bosses are not nearly as cheap, though they no longer feel menacing either. The gameplay itself is fun, which should be the goal for a beat-'em-up. The levels, however, feel totally random and the lead pipe is still way overpowered lol.
-Streets of Rage 3 (Genesis [PS4])
I thought at first that I'd like this game better than SoR2. The graphics are more detailed, the music (that no one seems to like) didn't bother me, and I cannot say enough how much I love the up/down dodge roll (SO MUCH). But it's too dang hard. The enemies have too much life. The bosses have swung back to the "cheap" side of the pendulum. It's a shame because this really could have been something special and while it certainly isn't bad, it fails to be a net improvement on its predecessor.
***Platinum Update!***
Beating Streets of Rage 3 netted me the final trophy in the Sega Genesis Classics collection for PS4. Woot!
-Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 (3DS)
Gunvolt 2 is fun to play. The action is satisfying and the art is a delight to behold (even if the music fails to be memorable). Copen (GV's rival) is now fully playable and plays very differently. Cool! But I suspect that is also the game's downfall. It's really short and easy. And while the playstyles of the two characters are very distinct, you're still playing largely the same levels. The level challenges help provide some replayability but fail to mask how little content is here.
-Great Ace Attorney 2 (Switch)
Great Ace Attorney 2 took the strong parts of the first game—the fantastic A/V presentation, great characters, and intricate plots—and tied them successfully into the overarching narrative that had slowly been building. And we finally got some good villains! These two games make an excellent whole...I just wish it wasn't quite so long lol
Games Bought
June was another low games month. My only "purchase" was the 2018 PS4 God of War game from PS+.
Games Being Played
-Mighty Gunvolt Burst (Switch)
The Burst combo system—killing a bad guy while right next to them—adds another layer of challenge for those who want it.
While Mighty No. 9 and Azure Striker Gunvolt were spiritual successors to Mega Man (bad and good, respectively), Mighty Gunvolt Burst is an evolution of classic 8-bit MM. I'm nearly through a run with Gunvolt but there are a gob of other playable characters to try and deep custimization to change up your playstyle. It's a cool game.
-Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate (Switch)
Continuing the grind into G** fights and upgrading my weapons.
-Mario Super Picross
7th world of Wario's puzzles.
-Destiny 2 (PS4)
Trying to catch up after being away for a week.
