Plumbing Reviews!

Hey folks, I have some big news for you all!  You know how the Super Mario Bros. Movie is coming out soon, right?  Well if you go to see it, make sure to watch the credits because my name is in there under “Plumbing Consultant.”  You see, in the movie, it shows the bros. as plumbers, and the animators needed to make sure the pipes they were working on looked correct.  And since I work in the plumbing section of a major hardware store chain (true story), they had me do that.  So why didn’t they hire a real plumber for that?  Well, licensed plumbers are expensive, and they wanted to save some money so they had me do it instead.  And because I do work for a major hardware store, they’re partnering with the Mario movie to sell special plumbing tools.  So for a limited time, you can get plumbing wrenches, pipe cutters, and plungers with red or green handles, like Mario and Luigi!

But before you start congratulating me yet, just keep in mind what holiday calendar date this blog was posted around.  And with that bit of April Fools out of the way, I’ve got some more game reviews I’ve recently written at GamerDad.com, and that’s no joke!  So please click on the links and read as many as you can, and maybe even post a ‘like’ or comment or two.  I’d appreciate it.  OK let’s begin!

Super Mario Bros. Movie Toys in McDonald’s Happy Meals

McDonald’s had Super Mario Bros. Movie toys in their Happy Meals in January, which is kind of weird since the actual movie doesn’t come out until April.  At any rate, I got a few of them, so let’s take a look!

Wonder Boy Anniversary Collection (PS4)

Last year we got a collection of classic Wonder Boy games, but there was only one problem.  Not all the games were on the collection!  Well they’ve seemed to fix that this year with Wonder Boy Anniversary Collection.  It now has pretty much all the Wonder Boy games, plus all versions of those titles and cool new bonus features.

Big Bad Smash amiibo

Got another batch of amiibo figures based on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate characters.  This time it’s a couple of big bad tough guys: Sephiroth from Final Fantasy 7 and Kazuya Mishima from the Tekken series.  Let’s take a look at them!

Devolver Tumble Time (Mobile)

Devolver Digital has published many a game over the years, and now you can play a puzzle game starring several of their characters. It’s available free-to-play on mobile devices, but reviewed on iPad here.

NEScape! (Switch)

Escape Rooms have been a popular form of entertainment lately.  From what I understand, you and a group are ‘trapped’ in a room and must figure out puzzles in the room in a limited time to get out.  Some of my friends and family said I would like these, but I dunno.  Depends on how much they cost, I guess.  But what if Escape Rooms came out during the 8-bit NES days?  You know they’d make a game about it on the Nintendo!  And now they have with NEScape!  It’s a new, unlicensed game running on NES hardware.  Originally you could only buy it as a cartridge, but now you can also play it on the Switch and PCs as well (reviewed on Switch here).

Trophy (Switch)

Originally a homebrew 8-bit NES game, you can now download Trophy on Switch, current Xbox consoles, and PC (reviewed on Switch here).  In the game, two scientists travel to another planet and befriend sentient robots there.  One of the scientists returns to Earth to report the findings, while the other one stays on the other planet and turns evil and takes it over.  Now it’s up to the other scientist to return to the planet, fuse with his robot friend to become Trophy, and save the day!  Trophy is a 2-D sidescrolling run and gun platformer clearly inspired by classic Mega Man titles.

Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider (PS4)

Battle oppression in a bleak dystopian future as a robotic samurai in Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider.  The game is designed to look and play like a 16-bit 2-D action game, like what you might’ve seen on the SEGA Genesis or Super Nintendo.

Pocket Witch (PS4)

Help a little witch and her bat friend make it to the exit of a spooky castle in this single screen 2-D precision platformer.

nOS: New Operating System (Switch)

nOS isn’t really a game, but it has a lot of basic operations that a tablet or computer would have, but now you can do those things on your Switch.  It has a calculator, picture gallery, a notepad, to do list, a simple paint program, and more.

Pretty Girls Breakers! PLUS (PS4)

Unlock outfits for cute anime ladies to wear while you swing a beam sword at a ball to break blocks in Pretty Girls Breakers! PLUS.  Yeah it’s pretty much a BreakOut or Arkanoid clone.  The PLUS adds new levels and game modes, but otherwise it’s more of the same from what I reviewed last year.

And that’s all for now!  Thanks for reading my reviews and posting ‘likes’ and comments!  I really do appreciate it.  Later!  --Cary

Thanks to your review, I finally figured out what nOS was.I don't think I need it.

No you don't need it.  Hope you liked my April Fools blog.  I haven't done one of those in a long time.  I wasn't in a joking mood for a couple of years there thanks to the pandemic and my mom's breast cancer scare.  I DO work in the plumbing section of a major hardware chain, though.

I always like your April Fool's blogs, Cary.

I bet I didn't fool you, though!

You had me going for the first sentence or so. Then I caught on.

I really do work in the plumbing section of a major hardware store, though.  That part is true.

I'll been watching the credits closely in the movie to see you (took the bait, hook, line and sinker).

I tried to get some of those Mario Bros. Happy meal toys. I got blue star guy and Peach. I wanted Bowser. Maybe a Goodwill will have one.

I want to see Serious Sam's face in that Devolver Tumbler.

Did I really fool you?  If only for a little bit?

I saw a bunch of Mario Bros. movie toys at Target.  The one I thought was really neat was a toy of the plumbing van that folded out into a playset.  If I see a Hot Wheels version of that van, I'm going to buy it.  I think I saw a LEGO version of that van, too, but I bet it's really expensive, as LEGOs tend to be.

On the 'cover' picture of my Devolver review, you can see a picture of Serious Sam on it.

Yeah, you did.

I'll have to look at those next time I'm at a Walmart or Target.

Oh, they gave Serious Sam glasses. Interesting.

A relative got me the Hot Wheels Mario Plumbing Van.  It's cool, but it was way too expensive on ebay.

I guess it should be a collectible item that'll be worth more in the future. Did you leave it in the box, or open it up?

Cary Woodham

It's still in the box right now.  I kind of do want to open it up to see if Luigi is on the other side.

From the pictures I've seen, it's Mario on one side and Luigi on the other, but the same decal for the most part, just different colored clothes.

Hope it's not just 'green Mario.'

They seem different, not just pallete swaps (I always wanted to use pallete swap in a sentence. Now I have).

Talk about JRPG monsters enough and you will.

KnightDriver

Yeah, I'm kind of behind in my JRPGs now I think of it.

Cary Woodham

I'm behind in modern RPGs.  They probably don't even use palette swapped monsters anymore.

I'm glad they were able to get a definitive Monster Boy collection out, though too bad an incomplete one came out first. I love the look of Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider but your criticism of the slow character movement keeps me back. That was my problem with Shinobi III on the Genesis.

Cary Woodham

I think Moonrider moves even slower than Shinobi.
