Old is new again

I don’t know about you, but I love old games! I grew up playing the Super Nintendo, so I’ve started collecting SNES carts (currently about 130 carts), but there are other great old games I enjoy getting too. While brick and mortar stores are great (and kinda rare), it’s much easier to buy games online. Which begs the question, Where should you go to get retro games online? Well, it’s your lucky day, because I’ve put together a list of several sites. In my opinion, these are the best sites to go to for retro games. If I missed a great site, please let me know down in the comments. Also, do you collect retro games? Anyways, here we go.

DK Oldies

I’ve been buying games from DK Oldies for years. They have a huge selection of games, ranging from Nintendo games (every console) to Sega games to Microsoft and Sony. They clean and test every game before they ship it to you. Also, one thing I really like is that they let you choose (if the option is there) between a “good” cartridge or a “cosmetically flawed” one. If you don’t care if the label is scratched, you can save a good chuck of change. They also ship out your order right away, so you get get it pretty quickly. Check it out.

Puzzles LTD

This one’s a little different because they specialize in fan made, English translated, and retro video games. Thanks to Puzzles, I was finally able to play Mother 3 on GBA hardware! They do very good work, and all the prices are fixed and reasonable. Want to play the original Custom Robo for N64? They have it. How about Capcom’s Sweet Home for NES? It’s here. What about those JRPGs you missed out on back in the day? They have English translations of Dragon Quest V and VI, Final Fantasy V, plus a lot more, on SNES cartridges! Plus, they have a ton of rom hacks, such as Hyper Metroid and Earthbound Halloween. This site really is a treasure trove that you might want to dig into. Check it out.

Lukie Games

Lukie Games is another great site with a huge selection of games, consoles, and accessories. Prices here are pretty fair too. When you click on a specific game, they will show you if it’s the game only or if it’s complete, and if you have the option, you can choose whichever you prefer. They also have a “rare and collectible” section that has only the most expensive games you’ll ever see, like Bonk’s Adventure for the NES (it’s over $1,000!). For some of us, it’s fun to just see which games are rare and how expensive they are, but if you’re one of those crazy collectors, you’ll probably like this site. Check it out.

Limited Run Games

Okay, this one’s sort of a cheat, as Limited Run does plenty of modern games. However, they also put out brand-new releases of retro games, and they do a fantastic job! Right now they’re doing a ton of Castlevania Collection releases. In the past I remember seeing a release of Dragon View, an old SNES game, on a green cartridge! They’ve also rereleased some classic NES cartridges, although it’s more common for them to release old games on modern hardware. Still, that’s a great way to play some old games, and Limited Run is doing its part to help with video game preservation. Check it out.

JJ Games

JJ Games is a great site with a huge collection of classic games, consoles, collectibles, and even repair kits. What’s great about this one is that they show you the actual cartridge that they’re selling, so you can see for yourself what condition the cartridge is in. If they’re selling a boxed game, they show you images of the box, the manual, and the game, so you know exactly what you’re getting. They also sell imported games, most of which are very reasonably priced. This is definitely a cool site you should keep an eye on. Check it out.

This Is Gameroom

Perhaps the best online site for retro games is this one, which is based out of Nebraska. Not only do they have a huge selection of classic games, consoles, and accessories, but they also have a huge selection of DVDs and Blu-rays. What’s most impressive about this site is that they tend to have better prices than the other sites (although it may vary). They also give you a lot of payment options, including MetaPay and Amazon Pay. It’s a quality site, and you can’t go wrong with this one. Check it out.

Cool! Glad to hear that your collection is growing nicely. I love old games but between the restraints of time and money I have had to kind of let go of seeking out old games. If I ever play through the old games I have already, maybe I'll look into getting some more!

Yeah, the challenge is playing all those old games, very true. I'm certainly not one of those people who collect games just to have them, I want to play them.

I kind of miss the mom and pop brick and mortar retro game stores.  There was one in a local mall for the longest time called FX.  And back in college I would go to GameFellas, which is a store that one of the folks who helped start PixlBit worked at.  I might've met him and not even known it then!  When I would visit family in Alabama, I would go visit a store called Player Two.  And when I was in high school, there was another retro game store in Alabama that was about the size of a walk in closet.  It didn't have a name and might've been a bit sketchy, but you couldn't beat those prices!  I got a lot of games there.

Retro game stores are the best! I'm actually fortunate to have several great game stores here in Colorado. Online stores are definitely not as special as walking into a retro store and actually looking around at all the cool stuff.

Another thing I liked doing back then was going to outdoor flea markets and many tables would sell new PSOne games super cheap.  Like getting an unopened copy of Ridge Racer Type 4 for 3 bucks.  That's one of the reasons why my PlayStation library is so big!  After a while they stopped selling video games at these flea markets and trade days, so I stopped going.

My friend and I used to do the flea markets too. Too bad, either overpriced or not selling games at all.

They have a small store in Lawton OK called Game King. Mostly I shop at Vintage Stock and Game X Change.

DK Oldies is based near me, and I wanted to go there, but it's online only. I might consider them but I like walking into retro stores. I have three within driving distance from me. I was just asking in one store today about Bonk's Adventure not knowing it was so rare. I swear I remember playing it sometime ago though. Probably a different game I'm remembering where the main character uses his head a lot.

Are you in PA? I think that's where DK Oldies is located. Also, that's surprising because I thought they had an actual store. I've seen pictures of a store, but maybe it's just their base of operations for all their online orders.

It's in Morgantown, PA, only about a half hour from me. I'm confused. They seem to have store hours but they say they are an online seller and it's labeled a warehouse and distribution center on the map. I'm going to have to go there and find out.

One company I recently did business with is eStarland. They sell games, but they also provide repair services. One of those services is replacement of save batteries in NES, SNES, and N64 games, and it's pretty cheap.

That's very handy. I'll have to keep it in mind since those batteries won't last forever.
