Games Beaten

-RWBY: Arrowfell (Switch)

Taken as an action game, Arrowfell is solid but kind of basic. I would not recommend it to someone who is not a fan of RWBY. You can instantly switch between the four characters and the game does a decent job of making them all useful for traversal but you can get through most combat by just picking one to main. It's fine. The game looks and sounds great and has fully animated cutscenes with the original voice actors, which is awesome. I thoroughly enjoyed it but I do love RWBY.

-Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate (Switch)

If you're into the Monster Hunter thing, Generations Ultimate is a feast beyond compare. There are so many weapons and new monsters continue to be introduced even late into the game. Fighting a late-game ferocious beast can be perilous even if you know what you're doing. Eventually I find it all kind of overwhelming and while this is not a game I would play solo, I do enjoy it for multiplayer.

Games Bought

After the game deluge of Christmas, January was pretty quiet. I finally bought Vampire Survivors (Switch) and have really been enjoying playing it. And January was the rare month where I opted for all three PS+ games (all for PS5, of course). Evil West is some kind of third-person shooter with crazy supernatural monsters and whatnot. It supports 2-player co-op, so I figure my wife and I might play it together eventually. A Plague Tale: Requiem is a big budget, story-heavy mostly stealth game. I think. I passed on the first game when it hit PS+ because it sounded like it would frustrate me a lot but this one sounds like they fixed those problems (but let's be honest, the odds of me playing it are still very low). Finally, Nobody Saves the World is the new game from the folks that made Guacamelee, which reminds me that I still need to play Guacamelee.

Games Being Played

-Vampire Survivors (Switch)

This game shouldn't be so good. It's so simple! But this dev has cracked some kind of code, because I am happy to keep playing this game and killings thousands of monsters.

-Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon (Switch)

Surely this game did not start life as a Bayonetta prequel but it works! And clearly a lot of love went into this game. I have really been enjoying it.

-Yakuza 0 (PS4)

I have meant to start this game for years and finally did it! Watch out, street hooligans!

-Destiny 2 (PS5)

We have been replaying this dungeon again and again, completing different challenges. The last one is to do it solo and I don't know if I can. It's very hard.

-Depixtion (Switch)

I finished the Halloween pack and have returned to the main game. I am looking forward to being done with these large puzzles.

I'm always curious about RWBY since it's the Rooster Teeth people (isn't it still?). I'd like to try the games sometime.

Vampire Survivors is strangely compelling. I've lately been trying to reimagine games as they might have been on Atari 2600. You wouldn't have to cut too much to make this an Atari game, or would you?

The graphics for Vampire Survivors are definitely NES+, so those would need a bump down for Atari, but the main problem is the crazy number of enemies that eventually flood the screen. It's only happened to me once or twice but I've had slow down on the Switch from the sheer chaos on screen.

Yes, RWBY is a Rooster Teeth production and I give it a hearty recommendation! Just remember, if you decide to watch it, that the budget for the first season or two was tiny. It has definitely grown since then. Arrowfell is a single-player game but there is a multiplayer one called Grim Eclipse. I haven't played it yet though.

I guess as you level up and get better equipment those VS mob swarms can be managed? Also, is the world endless or is there really someplace to travel to. I end up just going in circles a lot.

The levels in Vampire Survivors do have bounds but depending on the level it might be a giant open space or sectioned off or themed in some way. The level from the first DLC, for instance, has some open grass areas, a forest, a village, a lake...and maybe something I can't remember lol. There are also relics to pick up in most levels that give you permanent upgrades or unlock weapons or characters as well as items to help in that particular run. There is a lot to find and uncover in this game! Are you playing it now too?

Off and on. I search for items but I guess their locations are random.

Any relics or items should show up on the map (though I don't remember if you have to unlock the map first). It's really exciting when you start evolving the weapons! Once you get the grimoire, it will show you any weapon evolutions you've discovered.

I've upgraded weapons but I haven't seen a new map yet. I guess I got to play more and level up these characters.

I reviewed a game a few months ago that was a rip off of Vampire Survivor called Catlord.  The game didn't sell me on the concept, but that's probably because it wasn't a very good clone, I would think.

My brothers showed me a Yakuza game that was set in the 80s and all I did in it was play Space Harrier and Fantasy Zone in the arcade and talked to the cute arcade lady.  I'd be a horrible gangster I guess.

It's hard to put into words what exactly it is about Vampire Survivors that is so compelling but whatever it is, the game nails it. Sounds like Catlord does not.

That Yakuza game set in the '80s is the one I'm playing! I wouldn't be a good actual gangster either lol but I'll beat down fools in '80s Japan all day!
