Games Beaten

-Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom (Wii U)

In 2024 Tower of Doom feels kind of old. The characters are stiffer to control than I would like and the systems are not explained well. That said, the game does have depth to its combat and the characters are not copies of each other. The journey is the right length for this type of game and the branching paths adds in some nice replayability. I'm looking forward to the sequel.

-Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown (Switch)

The Lost Crown does so much right. It has an intriguing story set in an interesting world. Its Persian-inspired visuals and music set it apart from the other games in its genre. The controls are tight and responsive and the upgrades eschew many of the norms for this kind of game (keeping it interesting!). The default difficulty is a good challenge but there are many excellent platforming and combat challenges for those who want them. And the ability to take a screenshot and attach it to the map is perhaps the best addition to a Metroidvania EVER. I hope every game does that from now on.

Games Bought

I did not buy any games in November. However, one of my kids saw I Am Bread (PS5) on the PlayStation Store and was so tickled by the concept that he wanted to get it. I warned him that it is notoriously hard and that he should wait for a sale. And to his credit, he did and paid for it with his own money (I think it was about $3 at the time). And guess what...it's really hard! He tried all the modes and didn't get terribly far, except for the mode where you play a loaf of French bread and try to break as much stuff as possible. That one really spoke to him lol.

I did get a game for myself but I didn't pay for it. No, I didn't steal it (how could you even think that?). I won it on Twitter! It is the collector's edition of The House in Fata Morgana (Switch), a much-lauded visual novel. I had wanted to get this game when I first heard of it but didn't have the money for it (the physical version was exclusive to Limited Run) and had resigned myself to picking it up digitally sometime if it went on a good sale. I'm glad I don't have to worry about that anymore.

Last of all, there were some good PS+ games. Ghostwire: Tokyo (PS5) is a game I wanted to get anyway, so that's another thing deleted from my Amazon wishlist. Hot Wheels Unleased 2 - Turbocharged (PS5) is not a game I intend to play but I think my kids will like it.

Games Being Played

-Monster Hunter Rise (Switch)

Made it to Hunter Rank 6. I think the rampage missions are pretty cool, where you have to defend against an onslaught of monsters that come in increasingly-difficult waves.

-Destiny 2 (PS5)

Working through the seasonal content and trying to clean up some of the exotic quests. I'm behind on everything lol.

I played Hot Wheel Unleashed 2. I wasn't too thrilled with the first game but 2 seems to have tweaked something in the controls, and now I am totally on board with the sequel. I can't wait to get back into it when I have time.

That's good to hear! I should probably finally download it...

It's funny how you can tell from only an hour or so that the controls are just where you want them in a game.

I reviewed the Dungeons and Dragons games that Capcom put out on Wii U a long time ago.  Those are about the only ways I'd be interested in playing D&D.

I also reviewed I Am Bread.  I don't think I was impressed.

My gosh, I cannot imagine playing I Am Bread on an iPad. The controls are hard enough on the PS5. I tried the first level and the quirky awkwardness of the controls didn't bother me. That's just how the game is, right? It's unique and almost endearing. Then I needed to get into the toaster at the end of the level and that was SO HARD. I decided right there to not continue with the rest of the game (even though I did eventually get into the toaster). The game is a silly novelty but too finicky for my tastes.

I need to finish Ghostwire Tokyo, but in order to do that I have to let go of my completionist tendencies. So, I'm probably never finishing that game, since the side missions get a bit repetitive. However, the controls in that game are *chef's kiss*
