Greetings, lonely wanderers of the silent Pixlbit corridors! It's time for another update from the Little Ranger! I'm wrapping up my two weeks of rest and relaxation between my winter job at the pet supplies store and the park. I start at the park on Tuesday, and I'm looking forward to it. We have major infrastructure renovations happening, and it makes me ever so happy. New bathroom building, a second outhouse, and a brand new entrance booth with electricity, internet, and windows that open! Those buildings were 50+ years old and were showing their age and it wasn't pretty. We also have new equipment, which also makes me vey happy. Now, if only we had a building to house it in to keep it nice... Anyway, here's the weekly rundown.

Reading: About to finish up a book called Who's Afraid of Beowulf? by Tom Holt. Beowulf makes no appearances, nor is he even mentioned. It's essentially a comedic fantasy novel about a bunch of Vikings who are under a sleep spell and sealed in a ship burial in Scotland for 1,200 years and are awoken by an American archaeology student named Hildy. The reason they're taking a long nap is so that they will be awakened to save the world from the dark sorcerer, who is now a tech bro. The book is almost 40 years at this point and kind of outdated, but since it's a re-read from my late teens, when it was a favorite, I'm still enjoying it. The reviews on Goodreads are hilarious because a lot of the bad reviews are by people who are upset about the lack of historical accuracy (hello! it's a fantasy novel, people!) and people who are upset about the the dated tech references (the book was published in 1988, so yeah, the tech references are dated). I'll probably finish it today or tomorrow.

Watching: Pretty much what I was watching last week.

Playing: I've just started exploring Bahamut's Lair in DQ III, need to get back to that. Still playing BG&E, too. And I got back into Cozy Grove. I also boot up Animal Crossing once a week to pull weeds and keep my villagers from feeling too neglected. One of these days I'll get into the Happy Home Paradise content, I'm just more into catching bugs and fish than I am decorating. And Bramble. I don't think I'll finish it. I'm glad I bought it on sale and I'm only out $6.00.

Thanks for reading (all three of you)!

I'm always telling myself I'm going to replay Beyond Good & Evil but there are so many games I haven't played yet Undecided

Which Animal Crossing are you playing?

My nephew and I recently had a conversation about why, with all the games we own, we keep going back to the same ones. Neither of us had the answer.

New Horizons. I'm still in awe of all the small details in that game. Like the door on Red's boat being held on by duct tape.

I'm not really reading or listening to anything significant, but I sure am enjoying the heck out of Hello Kitty Island Adventure on Switch!

I look forward to reading your review.

Unfortunately, I'm not going to review it.  Sometimes I play games just for fun, espeically the ones I have to buy.  It's why you also won't see me reviewing Ys X: Nordics.  All you need to know is...both games are good.

Reader #3 here. Of course, there might be lurkers. Can't count them out . . well . . . can't really count them now I think of it unless there was a views count on this site, which there isn't.

So glad the park is busy with improvements! Long live the Park system!

I'll have to add Tom Holt to the Terry Pratchett I want to read - both doing comic fantasy I somehow missed in the 80s and should love.

DQIII! My plans haven't allowed me to get to that yet, but I am doing a turn-based RPG theme for May, and maybe I can pencil it in.

Tom Holt's first book, Expecting Someone Taller, is also good. It's a riff on the Ring Saga. Hapless guy runs over a badger, who, with its dying breath, manages to weakly tell him "I was expecting someone taller" and it goes on from there. I used to own that one, too, but I think it was a victim of the Great Mouse Plague in the loft of my grandmother's garage, where my sister's ex-husband put all of my stuff.

That turn-based RPG theme sounds cool. I'm looking forward to hearing what you've got on the list. The DQ III remake is pretty good. They prettied it up nicely and put in a full orchestral soundtrack.

I saw that first book and it really interested me because I used to be way into the Ring Cycle/Story of the Nibelung stuff in high school.

I'm so glad Dragon Quest remakes are appearing finally. I was happy when Final Fantasy did it, but DQ is my more favorite series.

I am so happy to hear that from someone else.I always feel like a heretic when I tell people I prefer DQ to FF. The way some of them respond, I half expect them to show up with pitchforks and torches.

Yeah, the FF fandom is pretty rabid, but DQ is more popular in Japan I hear - and with me. I love the look of the game a little better than FF. I did, however, fall hard for the Final Fantasy 1 Pixel Remaster. Man, that version improves the original so much.
