Birthday Reviews!

My birthday is coming up soon (September 15 to be exact), but the presents are for you!  You get game reviews to read that I’ve recently written over at GamerDad.com!  Just what you wanted, right?  Right?  Anyway, please click on the links and read as many as you can, and maybe post a ‘like’ or comment or two.  I’d appreciate it.  And just for fun, why don’t you send me a pretend birthday present in the comments section?  It’s the thought that counts, literally!  OK, let’s begin!

Pac-Man: The Official Cookbook

Recently a cookbook featuring Pac-Man was released.  You know me, the biggest Pac-Man fan around, I had to have it.  So let’s take a look inside and see what it’s like!

Donkey Kong Bananza amiibo

Donkey Kong Bananza is the newest 3D platformer on Nintendo Switch 2, and of course they made an amiibo figure out of it.  And of course I got it, too, so let’s take a look at it.

UFO 50 (Switch)

I’m about to show just how old I am.  I remember when my dad got our first computer.  I was around kindergarten age, and the computer was an Apple ][+.  We had it through most of my Elementary School years I think.  Anyway, after we got it, sometimes my dad would bring home a case of floppy disks home from work.  I would put each one in, not knowing what I’d get.  Sometimes it would be a boring application.  And sometimes it wouldn’t work at all.  But sometimes it would have games that I’d like.  That’s how I discovered titles like Snack Attack, Lode Runner, Drol, Hard Hat Mack, Spare Change, Choplifter, Aquatron, and more!  Now granted, looking back on it now, I think most of those games were pirated, but I don’t think either me or my dad knew what that was at the time.  Anyway, that grab bag of gaming fun is the feeling I get when playing UFO 50, a collection of 50 8-bit styled games.

Kimono Cats (Switch)

Join a pair of cats as they walk through a traditional summer Japanese festival.  Play mini-games, earn prizes, and collect furniture and items you can use to decorate your own village.

Maiden Cops (PS4)

In Maiden City, the police force and most of the population are made up of ladies who are half human, half animal.  OK, a little weird, but at least it’s a bit more imaginative.  Anyway, play as one of three ladies in the Maiden Cops police force as you take down a gang of liberators who are trying to take over the city in this beat ‘em up that’s clearly inspired by classics such as Final Fight and Streets of Rage.

Secret Paws: Cozy Offices (PS4)

Find little cats hidden all over office cubicles in Secret Paws: Cozy Offices.  It’s like a hidden picture hide and seek Easter egg hunt kind of game.

Alien Breakout (PS4)

Help a little green alien escape from a secret laboratory in Alien Breakout.  It’s a 2-D precision platformer with some run and gun elements.

Toree Saturn (Switch)

Help a little yellow bird with sunglasses compete against his evil mohawk wearing rival Hawkee in Toree Saturn.  It’s a 3D platformer clearly inspired by Sonic games on Dreamcast.  You’ll run through almost a dozen stages using speed boosters and skill to get ahead.

And that’s all for now!  Thanks for reading and posting ‘likes’ and comments on my reviews.  I do appreciate it.  And don’t forget those pretend birthday presents!  Later!  --Cary

I'm enjoying DK Bananza. I really like how Nintendo is going back to Donkey Kong's roots in Bananza and Mario Kart World, which started with the Super Mario Bros Movie. At the same time, they've kept a lot of the Rare lore.

Anyway, Happy Birthday! Here are a couple of tickets to Namco's Wonder Eggs amusement park in Japan.

Yeah DK Bananza was a great mix of old and new.  And the finale is one of the best Nintendo has ever done.  Definitely a GOTY contender.

Oh man, I would've loved to have gone to one of the Namco Wonder Eggs parks when they were open.  They're all shut down now.  You can even see Wonder Eggs theme park stuff in games like Tekken 3 and Ridge Racer Type 4.  The big Galaxian 3 arcade game was at one of those Wonder Eggs parks.  I think the only thing that's open now aside from arcades is that NamjaTown thing that is supposedly a couples' dating place.  So all I need to do is go to Japan and get a date and go to that.  Should be easy enough, right? :)

Best-looking thing in that Pac-Man cookbook is the smash burger, and it has nothing to do with Pac-Man. I see why you were disappointed.

Yeah and there's a lot more recipes in the book like that.

Nintendo annouced so many more amiibo in today's Direct video.  My wallet is crying.

You know I wrote about those Pac-Man donuts a while back:

I always look at the used amiibo at my game stores just to see if they have any Kirby related ones I don't have. Mostly they're too expensive for me to consider seriously unless I find a used one I like.

The latest batch of amiibo prices are ridiculous.  I'm going to have to really be selective on my Nintendo purchases in the future.  I'm already NOT getting the DLC for DK Bananza and I'm on the fence on the Mario Galaxy collection.

It's too bad. These amiibo should be more affordable.

Yeah it's absolutely ridiculous.  But I think that's all I'm going to say about that.

A lot of those disks with games for both the Apple II and the IBMs (and IBM clones) were shareware. My step-dad used to give them to me, they frequently came with programs that were purchased and they were tossed in as freebies. Kind of like the demo disks that Sony used to send out for the PS1 and PS2.

Yeah but the games on these disks were not demos, they were the full games.  So I don't really know if they were pirated or not.  It wasn't something I thought about back then as a little kid.  And I bet my dad didn't think of it either.  I remember the shareware scene on later computers, though.  That's how I was introduced to games like Jazz Jackrabbit, Christmas Lemmings, Tyrian, and more!

None of the games on the shareware disks my dad gave me were demos, either. They were full games.

I wish my dad would remember how he got them.  But that was over 40 years ago so I doubt he would remember.  Oh well.  I don't even think I knew what a demo game was anyway.  All I knew I was getting games to play.
