Preemptive Strike.....

Hello again.  As I'm still really new here, I figured I'd try to get some feedback on some topics about which to write.

I said it before, but as a reminder, I'm mostly an RPG and retro-game fan.  I play some of the newer titles (I'm just finishing up Ni No Kuni right now) but you guys can read about the contemporary stuff just about anywhere.  I'd prefer to post some reviews on some really obscure, older games.  I own almost any RPG of any note for any system, so those are easy for me to hook up and pop in.  But I'm not limited to one genre.... though admittedly Shmups don't interest me very much unless they are archaic.

Most of us are interested in certain titles that for whatever reason, we can't dig up any information on.  I'm willing to suffer through just about any game in the spirit of creating a dialogue or just filling in some internet information gaps.  I like bitching about games a lot, actually, so even the suffering brings me some enjoyment.

So make some suggestions; don't hesitate to pick some really musty, crappy, or otherwise unknown titles.  I probably own it, and I'm up for discussion..... and thanks for the participation!

How about dig into Ultima Exodus on the NES. I couldn't figure it out when I was 10 and I remember enough to think it's not worth it.

I should probably add some provisos.  I won't play a game that I've already beaten.  I also won't play a game that I've tried multiple times to beat but couldn't because of its crappy interface, horrific presentation and general inscrutability.  Ultima Exodus falls into the latter category.  :)

Honestly, that one is nigh unplayable. I wrote a crazy long series of blogs at 1up on the top 100 RPGs or somesuch, and it didn't come close to cracking the countdown.  I believe I had Exodus somewhere near the bottom of the (unpublished part of the) list, at like 210 out of 220.  It was that bad.  Quest of Avatar, on the other hand, was decent for the NES.

Thanks for the suggestion, however.  I promise to be more willing in the future if my demands are met! Cool

For me I don't think you can go wrong, I'm not a huge RPG player, not because I don't like them but time restrictions are usually a factor. What I would be interested to know is what titles you feel are an absolute must, perhaps your personal top ten of all time and why they made your list. It's not a review so to speak but it will give the community here a chance to see what makes you tick! Maybe you could then go full depth on the your top three, any how just suggestions man, what ever a man of your seasoned RPG experience has to say I'll certainly pay attention.

Here's my top 10, in no particular order.  Nothing exciting, I'm afraid, as most of these are universally known to be top quality.  The surprises come further down the list:

Zelda: A Link to the Past, Chrono Trigger, Super Metroid, Super Mario Bros. 3, Mike Tyson's Punchout, Metal Gear Solid 3, Snatcher, Metroid Prime, Bionic Commando, Final Fantasy X.  Maybe replace Punchout with Xenogears, but it's a close call, only because I love story-driven JRPGs.

Point is, everyone knows about those games.  For the most part, they are consensus picks (for good reason), and thus uninteresting.  I'd rather hear unusual requests, and if it's in my wheelhouse, I'll play it and give thoughts.

just write what you want to write about.  we all love games, even ones we don't play.  I'm a huge RPG fan but I don't have the time to finish a lot of them, and I'm always curious to hear about the ones I've never owned or never heard of.

Hey Snee.  It's not that I won't write what I want to write about.  It's just that, like many, I have this massive catalogue of games that I'd like to eventually get through, and it'd be fun to go in an unexpected order.  When researching which games to buy, there were so many that I had near no info on before I purchased.  At it stands now, the next games I plan on playing are Bionic Commando for Gameboy, Ninja Five-O for Gameboy Advance, Lucienne's Quest for 3DO, and some unchosen as of yet SNES RPG.  Probably Treasure of the Rudras.  But, like I said, I'll happily detour to talk about some other games.  :)

I love the NES version.  Utterly unique, even to this day.

But the two Gameboy titles.... I hear they are good.  Are they AS good?

I've never played the Gameboy titles.  But had I had them as a kid, I'm sure I would have played the hell out of them, good or not.

We shall see soon enough.  Bionic Commando for NES is amazing, though.

Crappy RPGs?  I've got a couple of ideas for you: Hydlide on NES, or Quest 64 on N64.

One action RPG I've always wanted to play and learn more about is The Twisted Tales of Spike McFang.  So if you have that and want to write about it, please do!

Hey Cary.  I actually did Spike McFang for you back at 1up.  :)  But I'm happy to repost it for you later this weekend.  I was unimpressed, to say the least.

No worries.  You've always contributed so much to these blogs, I'm happy to just have you reading.  No joke!

And it's funny you mention Hydlide and Quest 64 after Ultima: Exodus was metioned earlier...... When I was visiting my girlfriend in MN last Summer, I ranked EVERY RPG (not just the 100 I posted on 1up) I ever played, and three of my bottom ten were Ultima: Exodus, Quest 64, and...... you guessed it, Hydlide for NES.  Hydlide is actually the worst RPG I've ever played.  Just awful.

Man the bottom line for me anyway is rpgs are awesome theres not many that you can talk about that i wont join in on, although i mainly game on the 360, ps2 & ps and one that drives me crazy and i am always needing help on is Metal Saga on the ps2 that game is so cool but the story really does not direct you toward your goals you usually have to cruise around the game until by accident you run into a progression point, but like everyone on here who is rpg, srpgs, and strategy im a huge fan and will talk about just about anything you throw my way.
