(Some terminology used is in the interest of spoiler aversion)

So I picked up Spirit Tracks again, where I'm up to about the twentieth floor of a certain final castle thingy, and I almost forgot how annoying it is having to control the armor and call it over to you EVERY TIME YOU WANT TO TRAVERSE A FLIGHT OF STAIRS IN A PLACE WITH NOTHING BUT FUCKING STAIRS.

The stylus-only controls are not helping my blood pressure either. Now I remember why I put this thing down. I still want to finish it, but I'll be looking up a guide so I know exactly what I'm doing, cause fuck having to figure out if it's something I'm doing wrong control-wise, plus having to hear that incessant "wait for me" while I wait for the armor to hurry up and catch up to me will still run the risk of giving me an aneurysm, guide or not, so better to at least put a band-aid on that soul-sucking wound. Not to mention how hard it is to get this bucket of metal crap to push a damn block for me.

This is what you deserve, you bitch!

You know, maybe Nintendo really shouldn't try implementing new, game-changing ideas into Zelda, cause every time they do, I fucking hate it.

That's not true. I'm sorry. It's just frustrating. We're still friends Zelda and I, we're just going through a rough patch. I'm sure I'll figure this out like I did with Majora's Mask (cause, y'know, I'll grab a guide out of pure frustration from waiting too damn long), and we'll be all hunky dory again. Then we'll go for some ice cream.

On a side note, whoever got to that screen shot with only three hearts is pretty fucking hardcore about their Zelda. Must be Shaft playing it. Didn't realize he did LPs. Sounds interesting.

The stylus controls are why I didn't bother with those Zelda games on DS. I never could get used to using that thing. I can imagine how frustrating it would be trying to solve puzzles and what not with that.

It actually never bothered me that much until they introduce this armor controlling concept; that's when it started driving me batshit. lol

yeah I didn't go for the DS Zelda either.  I'm hoping the new 3DS one is different.  I never got passed the part in spirit tracks where you had to blow into the microphone to play that instrument.  I hated that crap.

That I actually kind of liked. Really, it's just this part that bothers me.

Nintendo's in a tough spot with Zelda games.  When they try something new, people complain.  But when they don't, people still complain, saying it's not innovative enough.  Nintendo can't win.

I loved Spirit Tracks, or as I call it, Chugga Chugga Zelda.  Although the last boss was HARD!

It's not that they try new things, it's that they implement them awkwardly. I wouldn't mind half as much if the armor just appeared in the next room you wanted to go into without having to call it every time.

I hadn't enjoyed a Zelda game in awhile.  Nintendo makes the games more complicated than they have to be.  I hate having to use the stylus.  It ruins the game for me.  I would love to play Skyward Sword, but Nintendo made the wiimote plus mandatory (I don't own one) and I have yet to find the game under $40, which is getting expensive to play a game that's a couple years old.

I don't hate having to use the stylus most of the time, but in the section of the game it gets really grating.

I caught the three hearts in the screen shot and I was wondering about who was playing it at end game with no power ups. lol

People take gaming to ridiculous levels sometimes, and I love it!

Meanwhile, I typically have like twenty hearts by the end, and will never complete a Mega Man game with a buster-only run. lol

In the end, I am probably just going to stick with my "classic" zelda games.  Those are the ones that I have fond memories of playing.  I just want simplicity when it comes to Zelda.  I love the oracle games, and Link's Awakening, and A Link to the Past.  Who really needs all of the gimmicks?  Not I.

I've actually played none of those, mostly I am a 3D Zelda gamer. Minish Cap was great, though.

I have Ocarina Of Time for 3DS and it controls okay. But I don't like using a stylus, never have. That sounds awful and aggravating. You know what they say about Shaft...he's one bad ass mutha!

Shut yo mouth! lol

And yeah, I didn't mind the stylus really until this section, where it just gets infuriating at times. I would have preferred a button to switch between two characters, and simply selecting an object for the armor to snap to, rather than having to draw it all the way there.

It's difficult for any direction Nintendo takes Zelda. A lot of people who have played Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword say Nintendo needs to reinvent Zelda but you say, and I agree, that any new game-changing ideas have just been bad ideas. I think the LTTP sequel is likely to run into this same issue.

I dunno, that actually looks like it could work. I see that drawing into the walls thing as more an extension of the dungeon puzzles than something that causes waiting and frustration like the Majora time mechanic or this section, which wouldn't be as bad if I could go up a flight of stairs without waiting for the armor.

I still need to play this one and Phantom Hourglass. Will I like it or not? That will be answered if I ever play both games.

Phantom Hourglass I rented and got annoyed by constantly having to go back to a central hub castle. It was cool, though.

I say rent either of them to give yourself a good idea.

Yeah the stylus should have been optional or at the very least used for just a few specific tasks. To me its just akward as hell to do everything with the stylus. The only games I have that make practacle use of the stylus are Advanced Wars Days of Ruin and Final Fantasy Tactics Grimoire of the Rift.

Elite Beat Agents would also be impossible without a stylus. Well, ok, not impossible, but the stylus just makes sense in that case.

and thus why I haven't gotten around to finishing up the zelda games I have, let alone the new ones I've yet to purchase. I can only stand so much aggrevation...

Super Step Contributing Writer

What Zelda games do you have? Are they stylus controlled ones?

NSonic79

05/25/2013 at 12:20 AM

nowhere near! I'm referring to the SNES and GC offerings that have NES and N64 Zelda games. I understand the aggrivation is all for fun with some of the game mechanics offered in them (besides Navi's constant one liner) but sometimes it can get overblown for me. I don't think I have the patience to handle the stylus controlled Zeldas.

It's that stupid time mechanic in Majora's Mask, isn't it? lol
