The Godfather a classic game even a more classic movie and in my opinion probably the best movie ever made. With that said this is a reveiw on the game, anyway The Godfather is an action adventure game and is based on the movie made in 1972, and the game being released in March of 2006, for the Xbox 360, Ps2,Xbox, Ps3, Wii and also a variant for the psp, the game actually has characters from the movie lending there voices for the game, James Caen, as Sony. Robert Duvall as Tom, John Martino as Pauli and Abe Vigoda as Salvatore and of course Marlon Brando was not in it due to his death. If this cast of original actors for the games not enough to sell you on this game then you probably will be wasting your time reading any further, if you are a fan of the show then this game will not dissapoint.
So the game starts in 1937 in Little Italy and starts with a cut scene that shows the death of Johnny Trapani the father of you ( well your character ) in the game and the destruction of his bakery your fathers, by Barzini crime family, the Corleone,s rival. And in the aftermath it shows Vito Corleone comforting the child ( you ) and telling you when the time is right you will avenge your fathers death and the story then moves to 1945, with the wedding that begins the film and so your story begins.
The game has two basic storylines one involves major events from the film, the second is your personal story. The player creates a mobster of there own customizing your characters physicle features, build, clothing and a very in depth face builder called mobface. And the game does an excellent job of letting you create your perfect mobster. Recreating The Godfather in all its brilliance is an almost impisible job to do in a video game, but EA does an excellent job of doing this and let me say, the voice acting, music and overall feel is the Godfather all the way around, the gameplay in the Godfather is an experience that comorises re-living the core story fromthe movie and freely straying into side missions and plot points. And on a side note Marlon Brando did work with EA on voice overs before his death and unfotunately Al Pacino couldnt reach an agreement with EA although he did give rights for Scarface a short time later.
Like GTA the Godfather is based on an open world design with well populated streets, cars etc, and starts you off with a very well made tutorial and it starts out very linear but after the tutorial lets go of your hand its an open free world. The game controls are smooth and responsive with a lock on targeting system that works very well, actually the only time i had an issue was when using melee weapons sometimes the lock on would lock on your target but you would miss and have to relock but really no big deal. Ea also allows you to free target to where you can shoot atanything you want, and another cool feature is you can shoot gangsters in the knee and the health circle shows the hit then you can walk up and do all kinds of cool brutal moves on them.
So the graphics are very well done for 2006 standards, and really i found very little wrong with the game, its a 40 to 50 hour game, plenty of areas to explore, the mission veriety is very good i mean you even sneak into a compound cut off a horses head and place it in the bosses bed wich shows a cut scene from the movie very cool to say the least, i may be a little partial to this game do to the fact that the Godfather is one of my all time favorite movies, but put credit where credit is due and this is an awesome game and if you havent played it, due yourself a favor and go get this game.
