Ys 7: First Impressions!

If asked to describe Ys 7 I’d say “It’s Secret Of Mana on turbo!”. While that statement is not 100% accurate it does at least embody the fast action combat and very impressive boss fights. (Which usually require some amount of strategy to win)

I’ve often described Ys story-telling as stereotypical yet oddly endearing. Aka, the series uses many clichés yet the characters are memorable and lovable. This just goes to show a generic fantasy plot can be good in its’ own right. Not everything tale to be “cutting edge” in order to evoke emotion and to weave metaphors relatable to the human condition. Put simply, if you don’t let out an “awww” around Maya or get a chuckle out of Dogi’s comically over-eager run animation you don’t have a soul!

"Maya will steal your heart! So adorable! Cuteness is over 9,000!"

There’s surprisingly a lot going on in Altago. Though ruled by a good king, the continent has been at war with the Romuns (slang for Romans?) and only recently established a peaceful alliance. Even as the king strives to be fair and compassionate, a couple of his advisors are war mongering greedy narcissists. Aka, right off the bat you see political corruption and a certain knight who is abusing his authority over the towns-folk. If that were not enough, a mysterious illness is going around. It’s ironic then that Dogi and Adol are asked to investigate ancient shrines tied to the land’s dragon gods. I don’t know what that has to do with illnesses or bureaucratic douche-baggery  but I’m sure those plot threads tie together further on in! (Er, at least I hope so?)

Regardless, you soon get to what makes the game so enjoyable! (Aka, exploration and monster busting) All of the creatures you encounter have different weaknesses. Some take more damage from blunt attacks and others take more damage from piercing or slashing attacks. As such, you’ll be switching between the members in your party quite often. (Thankfully, this is very easy) Each protagonist has a unique set of special attacks and charge moves. Additionally, an evasion button allows you to gracefully roll around and dash out of the way of incoming projectiles or bum rushes. This becomes especially helpful during more intense boss fights.

"Aisha pwns nubs with her archery skillz!"

As monsters are vanquished materials are collected. When using the synthesis option at shops these random parts can craft more powerful armor, weapons, and enchanted gear. The system is simple enough to understand and adds additional incentives to explore Altago while grinding and farming.

The only thing lacking thus far is the side missions. For example, one girl asked me to collect flowers for her and a fisherman asked me to bring back various types of wood for him so he could make more fishing poles. (sighs) Really? Really? (My lame Miz impression) It just seems as if boring fetch quests are outdated so I cannot comprehend why modern rpgs use them to this day! C’mon guys, it’s possible to come up with better filler material than this!

"I decree you fight this two-headed dragon turtle while listening to a power-metal ballad!"

Par usual the soundtrack in Ys 7 is awesome-sauce and comes at you with a mix of medieval minstrel tunes and other tracks that are hard rock and true power metal. The more intense electric guitar riffs especially  lend to the tension of the epic boss battles. Some gamers may take issue with the fact there’s no voice acting but the dialogue is so well written it was not difficult for me to imagine what each person would sound like if they were talking to me face to face. It is possible to project personalities and emotions with words alone and falcom has always been exceptional at pulling this off. Yes, a game doesn’t need famous celebrity voice talent to carry it to success! Let that be a lesson to publishers and developers whom blow huge budgets on the most ridiculous of frills!

Thus far my only complaint has been the boring fetch quests and frankly, that’s a small insignificant qualm. Though I’m not that far into Ys 7, it is shaping up to be a great rpg. Not that I’m surprised or anything. Falcom & X-seed haven’t disappointed me yet!

"Ha! Ha! Ha! SOTN reference for the win! I'm such a hopeless geek."

I actually prefer text over voice acting. Mostly because it's easier for me to read something than listen to (usually) annoying, crappy english voice actors. Especially where Atlus is concerned lol. Sounds like a cool game. I'm gonna see if my brother has it.

Funny, but I always thought Atlus's localizations were really good. Aka, the voice acting for Digital Devil Saga, Persona 3,Persona 4 Arena, and Persona 4(the rpg) was all top tier. (Personal opinion of course)

However, I don't "need" voice work in every game I play. I believe somtimes developers pay actors way too much money just so they say a few lines in their game.

I forgot about Persona 3. I was thinking more along the lines of the Disgaea series. Some of the English voice actors were awful. Then again, Atlus just published it lol. So ignore that previous comment. Usually I set the voices to Japanese if possible. It seems like they put a lot more effort into it.

Disgaea was alright. I at least thought Laharl,Etna, and Fione were well voiced. Granted they were a bit silly and melodramatic but Disgaea is supposed to be a comedy tactical rpg anyway.

Because I cannot understand Japanese as a language I'm not at liberty to say which voice actors do a better job with Disgaea.

However,I agree when the English dub is "utterly terrible shit" it's better to hear the Japanese voices while reading the sub-titles. You got a point there! Wink

I got one of the ys games on steam for cheap a while back.  I loved it.  I have a small desire to get a vita juts to play the next one.

If you ever get a psp or vita, Ys 7 is definitely worth checking out!

these games give me enough of a reason to kick myself for selling my psp a couple of years back.

I was in the same position when I gave my snes away many years ago. lol. However, it was bitter-sweet on account I knew the kids I gave it to would get a lot of enjoyment out of it.

Come my holiday I'll have plenty of time to play into the Ys Series, I started with Origin at the moment.

BrokenH

Origin was great! I beat it but haven't gotten the chance to finish Oath Of Felghana. (Though I beat the side scrolling snes version it is based on)

Ah cool! Another RPG for the PSP.

The psp has quite a few really good rpgs. I'm milking that for all its' worth,KnightDriver. lol.

Yup, this is one of my top five PSP games and I'm glad you are enjoying it.  I love the music as well.  Really enjoying your review of this and God Eater Burst.  You are cool.

BrokenH

Thanks,Cary! I would have reviewed these gems sooner but I had no psp until good ol' Dave came along. So far I'm really enjoying what the psp has to offer. My 360 is feeling very neglected right now. Poor thing!

That's a perfect description of the combat, mate. lol. One of the reasons I'm loving it so far.

I am ready for Ys on the Vita.

BrokenH

05/29/2013 at 06:47 PM

Yes, the newest Ys game should be coming out soon. It looks fab so far! Then again, there has never been a Ys game I haven't clicked with so far. I'm glad Xseed/Falcom have kept in business!

Totally,James! Having a psp is awesome, bro! I remember drooling over Ys 7 and so many other games before I even had a psp. It was torture. As a whole I think sony caters  to my gaming tastes more than microsoft does.

Sounds like a soundtrack I would like the sounds of. Mmmmm midieval minstrel power metal. How sweet the sound.

Voice acting is fine when it's done right, honestly sometimes I would prefer I could take the text off cause having it takes me out of the story, but then sometimes I want only text, particularly if I'm having to make decisions, so I can take my time reading it without an annoying character voice doing that for me.

BrokenH

05/29/2013 at 09:45 PM

Ys 7 has good narrative. Aka, reading the text isn't painful most of the time. lol. But yeah, if you enjoy power metal and actiony hach & slash rpgs then Ys 7 is your game,Joe!

It's scary how engrossing GEB can be,Adam. I was the same way. I beat the main story campaign but I still need to push through the Burst expansion content!

Yet another reminder that I need to get the Y's game series on the PSP quick before those go away. looks like my kind of rpg to add to my collection. i can't believe they put a SOTN reference! that has to be the american ver. don't recall the japanese script was that corny.

BrokenH

05/29/2013 at 09:49 PM

Ha! ha! ha! It's the American version. lol. I dunno, I got a laugh out of the sotn reference. (Probably because I'm really lame) Definitely snatch up Ys 7 though. It's a jewel!

Back in college I rented a Ys game for PS2 and I can't remember which Ys game it was exactly.. I do know that I enjoyed it a lot though! Shortly after I rented it though, they pulled it from the shelves and replaced their entire PS2 collection with the run-off of 360 and PS3 games.. I was rather sad I never got to finish it..

BrokenH

05/30/2013 at 12:37 PM

For me the PS2 era was more memorable than my 360 era. I'm not saying I don't appreciate my 360 but by and large microsoft is moving away from people like me to cater to a whole new demographic. (Think about any recent Jrpgs on the 360. Um,there are none!)

Regardless, if you get a psp or Vita definitely look into the other Ys games,Chris! Fun times indeed!

Decent JRPGs on 360:

Lost Odyssey
Eternal Sonata

Both were GREAT games man! If you haven't played them, then I would definitely recommend them, especially Lost Odyssey! It was a great throwback to the SNES era of JRPGs and had an awesome story line as well!

Those are the only two memorable ones for me though.. Frown

Tales Of Vesperia was good too,Chris. Magna Carta II,Nier, and Star Ocean Last Hope deserve consideration too! Nier is my personal favorite Jrpg on the 360 but I admit it's an accquired taste and not for everyone.

Chris Yarger Community Manager

05/30/2013 at 01:47 PM

Oh shit man.. I forgot about Vesparia, that was an awesome game!

And Nier would've been awesome if it weren't for that stupid fishing mini-game!

BrokenH

05/30/2013 at 01:53 PM

Ha ha ha! The fishing mini game killed Nier for a lot of folks. Luckily for me, I picked it up fast and understood it right away. The part that gave me some problems was the "text adventure segment" that happened in the lost forest. Aka, I'm not the best at memory games and making perfect choices.

But yeah, Vesperia is great. It's one of the better Jrpgs I've played bar none. I need to get back to it and beat it someday!

Sounds good. Wish they would have stayed with the crisper sprite look for the characters though, like Ys Origin.  These 3D models look plain and blocky. Oh well.

BrokenH

05/30/2013 at 07:45 PM

I admit I prefer the look of Oath Of Felgahna and Origins,Chris. Still, jaggy polygons aside, this is a really great game in all other respects. Also, it looks pretty nice on the psp screen. (Especially the bosses) However, this would be an "ugly duckling" on a full scale television set. You have a valid critique!

Hee, gotta say that you picked my interest in trying the game. Should I try getting this one, or another one of the saga to learn more the mechanics?

BrokenH

05/30/2013 at 10:16 PM

All the YS games are fun,Alejandro. It's difficult to say which one to go with first. Oath Of Felgahna and Origin play much alike but Ys 7 mixes things up in some regards. However, because each Ys story in self contained you don't have to worry about being out of order. Even if you find yourself lacking a psp Ys Origins and Oath Of Felgahna can be gotten off Steam!

Curse my lack of free time.  I've had this game on my shelf, unopened, since it came out, and I have yet to find the time for it.  At the very least you're enjoying it, despite what others have said; I remember some critics were annoyed with the game's overly chatty nature, but as long as the gameplay holds up I don't see that as a problem.

I am surprised that fetch quests were added, though, as well as item farming.  But, I suppose another three hour romp (which is typical of an Ys game) wouldn't cut it here, so something needed to be done to extend the length of the quest.

BrokenH

06/11/2013 at 05:43 PM

It's longer but still reasonable,Jeff. Aka, I wouldn't say it's as long as Skyrim on Persona 4. However, it is a lot more meaty than other Ys games so you're right there.

I've never played a Ys game, though I have enjoyed plenty of the series' good music. Sounds like you've played the other ones on the PSP. Which one did you enjoy the most?
