8-Bit Brews

There’s something you guys may not know about me. When I’m not writing for PixlBit, playing video games, or puttering around at my other job, I find time to turn water, hops, yeast, and barley into delicious beer.

That’s right, I brew my own beer and have for quite some time now. The fermentor is currently playing host to a malty red ale, which I am calling “Full Figured Red.” I’ll be bottling that next week, and I’ll be sure to let you all know how it turned out once it’s conditioned, but there is something I’d like your input on now.

You see, I’ve always wanted to bring my love of video games and brewing together somehow, and I think I’ve figured out how. Over the next year or so, I’m going to endeavor to create some video game themed brews. I’m dubbing it my “8-bit beers” collection - catchy, ain’t it?

So what do I want from you guys? Well, I need ideas. I’m going to start the brew from it’s name - mold the recipe around that theme. So come at me with some video game themed brew names! Remember to work the style in too, if you can. I’ll collect the best sounding names and create a brewing schedule, which I will share with you guys.

For those that enter a name, and are over 21, I may send a bottle of the brew your way. I can’t guarantee this, as the shipping of alcohol is not legal in all states, etc…, but it’s something we’ll try to work around.

I look forward to all the suggestions, and remember….

Game on.

You're a pretty cooool cat J-Bone. I could imagine you and Dr. Zeschuck formerly of Bioware talking shop about beer crafting. I'd definitely like to have you send me a beer of some kind, maybe it will be one of the cool ideas we come up with here as you mentioned in the blog.

There's so much beer in games, any game I play has its own types. The first thing that comes to mind is something from Bioshock but I'd have to play the game some more and fish around for names, visual theme, and the kind of atmosphere the beers have. Another thing that always come to mind is beer in Elder Scrolls games, but often times it's wine not beer. The beer is just Mead and stuff and the types that actually have names, such as Surrielles from Oblivion is actually wine. I need some time, but I guarantee we can all come up with some great gaming beer themes.

There's gotta be some great Bioshock theme idea waiting around for us to find. It would be mighty relevant seeing as Infinite is coming and it's my most anticipated game in a long time. I haven't been so excited since, I don't know, probably Mass Effect 1 in 2007.

BioShock, Skyrim, and Mass Effect are rife with ideas for brews.  It's a good place to start, to be sure.

I like strong beer. The stuff I drink is usually 8% and tastes like garbage lol. I can't stand the taste of beer... but If I'm gonna drink it I want to get drunk.

So make something strong!

I AM ERROR. That's my suggestion.

I'm not much of a beer drinker. I'm not much of a drinker, truthfully. I have yet to find a beer that suits my tastes, and so far the only good tasting memory that I have from drinking beer is from when I was a kid I was given to try what can be translated as Black Beer. It had a sweet taste. Yup.

I can tell from your handle alone that we were destined to be buddies.

Sticking with the 8 bit theme and at the risk of looking incredibly stupid...

Belmont IPA - Vampire hunting can be an arduous task and what better way to relax after a hard night of slaying than with a tall glass of Belmont IPA.  A bold mix of (insert ingredient here) and (insert ingredient here) come together perfectly to fill your nostrils with the pleasantly strong aromas of (insert smells here) complimented only by the brash taste of Belmont IPA.  So before you go and kick in the door of Dracula's castle, get a kick of your own with a Belmont IPA.

PS: I know nothing about brewing beer or how to properly describe them... I just drink it.  Anyway, good luck with the brewing.

Belmont IPA sounds amazing. I want it.

I was thinking Vampire Killer red. I don't know how easy it would be, but i'm thinking it would have to be very rich, thick, full bodied and maybe even a little spicy. Also POTENT.

That's an awesome idea dude! I figured I would just throw some names out and see what stuck:

Double Dragon Spin kick Stout

Donkey Kong Barrel Ale

Simon's Curse Ale (Could be similar to 'Dead Guy Ale' in consistency)

Dr Wily's Revenge (I'm thinking Mad Elf in terms of strength)

Hope some of these help, man!

There are few things that stand above my love of beer and videogames.
