Dang you, Metal Gear!

So I was on Amazon looking something up when I noticed an item called Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection. What's that, I wonder.

The Legacy Collectioin

Check out this description:

  • -The Legacy Collection includes Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2, Metal Gear Solid 2: HD Edition, Metal Gear Solid 3: HD Edition, Metal Gear Solid 4 Trophy Edition and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker HD Edition
  • -Also includes Metal Gear Solid 1 and Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions via included voucher codes
  • -2 Exclusive Ashley Wood Bande Desinee Graphic Novels; Upscaled in HD and released for the first time in North America and Latin America
  • -92+ Average Metacritic Rating for all games
  • -100 PG Artbook - spanning the 25 year history of the acclaimed Metal Gear series

As someone who has only played the oft-maligned GameCube remake of the original MGS, I've been comtemplating getting into the series more for a long time. I've been waiting for the HD Collection to drop in price again or show up on PlayStation Plus (Europe got it) but neither has materialized. Now I'm glad I didn't spend the money. I mean holy crap, look at the list of games in The Legacy Collection! Not even The Orange Box can compare to that value. This is the collection I've been waiting for!

Look at all that!

But (don't you hate that word?) I've already pre-ordered SMT IV for the 3DS, which costs $50 because of the first run Special Edition, and I can't afford both next month when they come out. I do want SMT IV and don't want to miss out on all its bonus crap, but I have this irrational fear that there will be a low print run of The Legacy Collection or I somehow won't be able to get the voucher codes or something. Someone please tell me that, duh, this Metal Gear Freakin' Solid and they will make a bajillion of these things! Of course they will, of course...

That's a great value. I know GH would certainly recommend it lol. My question would be do you really need to add eight more games to your backlog? PS3 owners really got screwed on the Orange Box collection. It'd load like every 5 seconds. I read somewhere that Valve even said they F'd it up lol.

Well, no, of course I don't need any new games lol but I haven't bought these games individually because I was hoping this sort of collection would come out. I won't be getting it right away but I'll keep an eye on it. $50 is a great deal for all that content but maybe it will drop in price...

I paid a lot more than $50 and still don't have the original Metal Gear or Metal Gear 2. I would probably buy it over SMT, but I don't even know what SMT is lol. I bought a PSP for Peacewalker. Those games can be hard to get into, but if you liked Metal Gear Solid you will probably be really happy with it. I was planning on reviewing VR Missions someday.

SMT is Shin Megami Tensei. Sorry, was just making blind assumptions there lol.

Yeah, that's a pretty intense collection.  I think though I would get the Vita collection if I had a Vita.

Amazon doesn't list a Vita version of The Legacy Collection, though that doesn't mean one might not be in the works. It would be the first time MGS4 is playable on a portable if they do put it out on Vita.

no, I don't think the legacy collection is coming for Vita, but you can get a collection with 2 and 3 on it.

Too bad they couldn't port Twin Snakes, Nintendo and Silicon Knights need to talk

I thought The Twin Snakes was good but I don't have a frame of reference to compare it with the original.

I actually liked the Gamecube remake, but I digress. Honestly, I remember people's main issue being that the initial Ocelot boss fight was ruined by being able to go into first person. Meh, I say, but then again I mostly watched my older brother play the original, so maybe there's more significant differences I'm forgetting. Played both though, liked the remake.

And that collection does sound awesome. Also, I'm aware I just totally misused the word "digress."

I think the main complaints with The Twin Snakes stem from the fact that the developers took the innovations from MGS 2, like firing from the first-person or being able to stuff unconscious guards into lockers, and shoehorned them into a game not designed for those mechanics (the original, I'm told, does not contain a single locker). Despite that (which I didn't know at the time anyway), I thought it was a pretty good game. Certainly looks better than the original lol.

Also, way to stick by your guns even when you know you're wrong Tongue Out

About the use of the word digress? Cause I'm correct about the perfectly decent quality of Twin Snakes. Tongue Out lol

I agree with you about the quality of Twin Snakes. You just didn't have anything to digress from lol

Well, yeah, I said as much in my original comment. lol

If it only had the Metal Gear mini game from Ape Escape 3...

And vice versa, the Ape Escape mini game from the PS2 MGS3...

I have yet to experience any of those escaping apes, unfortunately Undecided

Collectors editions will be the end of my wallet.

Many times I've read about what is in the collector's edition for different game and thought how cool it'd be to get it...but I'll be darned if I'm gonna pay $150 for a game, regardless of how many art books, soundtracks, or action figures it comes with lol (though if I had I lot more disposable income, that'd be a different story)

I don't think you have to worry about the Legacy Collection being limited in supply.  If Konami is good for one thing it's keeping the Metal Gear series available in its entirety.  That said, this is a very nice set.  I only wish the PS1 games were included with this set on the disc (even if it pushed the cost up another $10).  PS1 game discs still work on the PS3 regardless of the model you own, and it would have been a really cool extra.

Thank you! That's exactly what I wanted to hear lol. I agree about the PS1 games though. I understand why they couldn't just throw them on the Blu-rays but surely it could not have cost much to print a CD with the games on it. As it is, seems like a bonus for buying new. It's hard to fault them for that but it keeps this from truly being the definitive collection of the series (if you don't count Snake's Revenge, MGS GBC, and the other PSP games, that is).

I'm actually surprised they haven't released a collection of the side games yet.  Granted, a considerable amount of work would need to be done to port the PSP games over.  But, it would make the entire series (up until now) available on one console.  They would probably cut Snake's Revenge, unfortunately, because it was not sanctioned by Kojima.  Then again, maybe he would include it to poke fun at it.

I imagine Kojima has more ill will towards the NES port of Metal Gear than he does for Snake's Revenge, and he's proven before that he can laugh at himself. It'd be awesome to have the entire series available like that, and thanks to Peace Walker we know they can bring the PSP games over. Maybe a collection of the side games? If any series will get such complete treatment, it will be MGS.

Sounds too good to pass up. I love having a collection of classics like those. I will definitely be getting this one. It's the first two games on that list that intrigue me. Never played those before.

I'm pretty sure the MSX originals have been made available before but at this point this collection will definitely be the easiest way to play them.

Now THIS is the metal gear I've been waiting for. I got burned with the "essentail" collection (kinda) and I held out after the HD collection game out. Perhaps it's time to see on this version, even if the original MGS is just a Download.

I wish the original MGS was physically include but still, I doubt we'll get a more complete collection than this.
