Animal Crossing

Animal Crossing is gay. I should have guessed as much from looking at the box art. Not that I have any problem with it, I'm fairly liberal but honestly, this game is really gay. As soon as I got off the train I was given the job of mayor of the new town and given a small tent to sleep in, this isn’t the gay part. Taking on the role of mayor means you have to constantly interact with the town folk to increase your approval rating, seriously. You can't do anything at all like build stuff or whatever without popularity and permits. So you have to go around talking to everyone, hearing them out, complimenting their outfits, running errands, etc. There is also an awful lot of interest, “a lot” of interest, in interior design, home decorating and fashion.

It's interesting that although there are both male and female characters in the game, at least I think I can tell them apart, and I'm assuming this is a kid friendly game and personal relationships aren't a part of the game design, I found it interesting that one of the towns folk was very gossipy about a couple of other male characters that he suspected of "spending too much time together". I thought about it for a moment. Was this character insinuating “something” about the other characters in the town?  Yes. Yes he was. My suspicion became true as I went over to talk to these two characters to complete a game quest and one of the characters had me send over a gift to the other because he was too shy. The gift was an article of clothing which was immediately worn. When I went back to the original character, he asked if the gift was well received. Both of these characters were male. It was very surprising to see that the first relationship I helped consolidate as mayor was this one.

Now, this is how the game normally plays out between all the characters, they generally gift things to each other and you also gift things in return, but if it weren’t for that original comment about the “spending too much time together” I wouldn’t have thought too much about it. There also seems to be a lot more womens clothing available as opposed to mens clothing in the clothing shop. Are the game developers encouraging cross-dressing? I’m fairly convinced that the game is a simulator of days passed on a trip to San Francisco. It’s only been a few days yet...

Well, 56% of its sales are apparently from females (or actually, I think that referred to the 3DS hardware sales, which would also have an impact on who's buying this) and I thought the whole interior decorating thing was part of the franchise from the word go. I mean, no offense, but I never saw Animal Crossing as a very "manly" franchise to begin with; not saying I wouldn't play it, it sounds fun and addicting. If I had a 3DS, I'd at least rent it, and I rented the Gamecube original (just had too little memory card space).

As for the gay thing, kid friendly stuff has romances all over it (Jasmine/Aladdin, Woody and Jessie and his mistress, Bo Peep, etc.) so the gay thing is just a natural progression of media, I think. ParaNorman had a funny thing at the end about gays, and it'll probably happen more often in children's media.

I think the amount of lady gear as opposed to male is again just due to demographics as opposed to a scheme to encourage cross-dressing. But hey, cross-dressing could be fun in-game. Knew a Desk Assistant in college who liked to cross-dress, and he was a very professional, friendly guy, with a lovely girlfriend. Conservative (libertarian) politically, too, except I'm sure in terms of certain social issues.

My question is, will they ever make an Animal Crossing that has a town equivalent to Oakland? Cause I'd play that for sure! Animal Crossing: Raiders Fans Edition. lol

I was expecting a leisurly sim game about collecting and fishing, so I was a bit surprised to see how the lives of others in the town play out. I have started fishing and it's very relaxing now. But LOL.Surprised

ha, good blog.  yeah, Animal Crossing may be a little gay.  I personally haven't played it, but like Joe said I think mostly women play it, and I know it's one of the few games Cary's mom plays, etc.

but there's nothing wrong with that, and I wouldn't mind playing it if I was into the gameplay, which I'm kind of not.

Who doesn't like fishing by the pier? The games politics don't bother me, just unexpected. Collecting stuff is a bit addictive. I'm like a hoarder now. People keep giving me stuff too. It's fun.

Animal Cross Dressing! lol  I found a copy of the Gamcube version at Toys R Us, it was under ten bucks and came with a memory card. I Bought it for the memory card, and I tried the game and I just couldn't get into it. Seemed like the whole point of the game was to collect crap  to decorate your house with. I'm a bad enough pack rat in real life, I really don't need to take that bad habit into the digital realm. Plus it was just boring. To me anyway, its been a popular series so someone likes it.

Strictly looking at the game design, it does hold interest to me. The game is basically alive, using a real time clock, so if it's 10PM in real life, it's 10PM in the game and everyone is either asleep or the town shops are closed and you can't do anything unless it's morning. I think it's clever and funny. I also like fishing. I also got a one of those old video game cabinets in my house.

Guesse I should have gave it more of a chance. But its also sounds a lot like a sim game, which I'm not really into. Oh well to each his own.

I enjoy the collecting of fish, bugs and dinosaur bones. My house in AC will never win any awards. I just buy shit and throw it in. My goal is to fill the museum and expand the town.

How do you raise money? The only way I can seem to get money is by collecting shells and butterflies. Is there a better way? My house is fabulous by the way. LOL.

Warning to AC players. Spoilers ahead. If you want to discover stuff on your own do not read!

There are several ways. The fruit on your trees bring 100 bells each. Fish bring various prices depending on how rare they are, and fossils bring in a ton once the owl dude has identified them. I normally donate to the museum first but once you start getting repeats you can make thousands selling that shit. If you successfully plant the fruit that grows natively you can produce an orchard. Some trees don't take though and you will find them dead the next day.

Once the island opens up you can sail across with Kapp'n. If you don't like his songs you can press a button (can't remember which right now) repeatedly and he'll stop.

On the island you will find rare fruit, fish and bugs you won't get in your village. There are also mini games (tours) that will net you medals that you can use to buy shit from the people in the island store.

Once stuff starts to open up in the game you'll make bells at an alarming rate. I made 40,000 yesterday. :)

Warning, possible spoilers ahead.

I guess you know you can make money by shaking trees because that's how you got the bee sting. LOL. But did you know the beehive they leave after they are gone brings in 400 bells?

Run around hitting the rocks with your shovel too. Each day there is usually one that gives you bells each time you hit it for a brief period of time and they multiple. 100 then 200, then 300. I usually screw up and dig a hole right in front of the rock and by the time I fill it in again, no more bells. There is also 1 rock that will break and you'll find gold or silver or emerald, etc. in it

I don't think it's gay at all.  I find the series to be refreshingly gender-neutral in its presentation, and I think the "girly" (or maybe even "gay") reputation it's earned over the years has been more than a little unfair.  Home decoration has been a part of every Animal Crossing game, and having the option of customizing your appearance more with clothing is, I think, very refreshing to the gameplay (well, for as much as these games really have, anyway).  I'd hate to be playing what's really the fifth generation of the game and still have my clothing limited to a shirt and some pre-rendered shorts and sneakers.

Also, I got quite a kick out of the cross-dressing aspect.  While visiting a friend's town I visited her clothing store and considered buying her a skirt that was on display.  When I clicked to see the price, I saw it gave me the option of putting it on.  So I did.  But I enjoyed just as much Sable's somewhat bemused reaction to asking to try on a skirt--kind of surprised and describing it (to a male avatar) as "feeling adventurous," but also kind of like, "Hey, if you want..."  The game certainly has many humorous bits worked into the script, and I think it suits that particular situation quite well.

The particular section I mentioned was very obviously hinting at a gay connection. I think the translators were having a bit of fun, but that was not imagined on my part. I think kids would have missed the signs, but being an adult it was very obvious what was being implied. I've also read other articles that call the game "gender neutral", which I would agree with, except for that one moment.
