The danger of fandoms.

As Social Media and the Internet envelop us more and more, I see the dangers of being too obsessed with celebrities and their lives and fandoms for various franchises. Too many people, most of them young and naive, seem more interested in spending every waking hour they have talking about a celebrity they are obsessed with or a book series they read religiously than about taking care of their own lives. Perhaps these lives might be sordid cases of abuse, neglect and frustration, others might have a mental illness. I doubt any normal human being could spend hours online obsessing over some Hollywood celebrity or a book/movie series/T.V. show. I would find it very boring after 10 minutes but there are people whose entire life is built around over a celebrity. I only hope these people look in the mirror and realize that they are wasting their lives and mental health over it. All humans, regardless of their station in life, are equal and should be treated equally. They are not to be worshiped like a God. I am equal to 7 billion others, no more, no less. Society would be better if these individuals would wake up, smell the coffee and think about themselves instead of some wealthy celebrity who wouldn't piss on you if you were on fire. It makes them look second-rate. Sadly, most of them take that advice as an insult. I guess life wouldn't be worth living if it weren't for their obsessions. Well, at least the Goth movement will be happy to gain new members.

I saw this at Urban Dictionary and thinking about it for weeks, this guy hit the nail on the head when it comes to Message Boards:

A Message board is a rag-tag collection of pretentious douchebags. Any type of social reject will be found on an message board. For instance,

1. Nerdy Crybabies.
2. Internet Tough-guys.
3. Racists.
4. Passive-Aggressive Assholes.
5. Aggressive Assholes.
6. Tools/Try-Hards.
7. Perverts.
8. Misogynists.
9. Dorks.
10. Basically anyone who the world is a better place without.

Any kind of normal person will eventually be driven away by the circle-jerk of a clusterfuck of nerds stroking each others egos.

Not every message board is filled with these types but the ones I frequented certainly had these people. I was probably one of these types at times. Which is why avoiding these message boards is a good way to rehabilitate my image. I don't know how somebody with 50,000 posts or is proud to kiss the administrator's butt to gain a moderator gig could be proud of themselves.

Heard rumors that Don Mattrick might be on the outs with Microsoft. Maybe he could be Carly Rae Jepsen's manager or something.

Unless you are Chuck Norris. Chuck Norris IS God.

I personally enjoy message boards, and truth be told, PixlBit is mostly born from one. I got into writing about games at the Planet GameCube (now Nintendo World Report) forums. This eventually resulted in me applying for a staff position there, which in turn inspired me to strike out on my own and make my own website.

I say live and let live. If people want to obsess over celebrities, go for it. I don't personally get it, but if it makes them happy, who am I to judge? I enjoy lots of things they likely perceive to be worthless, so what makes my hobbies/interests any better or more fulfilling?

You, at least, are doing something that's for the good. I don't see trying to get a tweet from Lea Michele in the same vein.
