Man of Steel Angry Rant

How the fuck did this film get 55 on metacritic. Did these people watch the fucking film? I saw a bunch of user ratings saying "We don't like Zack Snyder, 0 out of 10," and others saying "Perry White is Black? BOYCOTT!!" Anyway, users aren't what I care about, because they were parented by the country music channel and are therefore racist, ignorant, autistic buffoons. What I care about are some of the actual critics reviews. "This film was just not fun." DID YOU SEE SUPERMAN GET PUNCHED THROUGH THREE FUCKING BUILDINGS?! Did you see the whole intro on Krypton? Did you see the shit tonne of jokes in the film? Instead of knocking a dude out, Clark impales his truck through three telegraph poles. I had a smile on my face throughout the entire film. It's not the film's fault you're an insufferable twat. "There was no emotion in the film." What? When young Clark was freaking the fuck out because he could see his teacher's muscles and bones and hid in a closet. The many conversations with both of his fathers spring to mind. THAT FUCKING ENDING!!! No emotion? Do you have aspergers you backwards cunt? Because not being able to perceive emotions is the only way you could come to that conclusion.

Now for the biggest criticism levelled at this film. "It's too much like a Dark Knight film." To which I ask how? Is it because it's an origin story with some tragedy? Dude. Did you read superman in the nineties? He was darker than batman in some instances. He is Superman here. He doesn't fuck around, he is shining beacon of moral integrity. He does what has to be done. He isn't Batman in this film. The film isn't as dark as the dark knight films were either. or as realistic. As I said before, flying through petrol tanks, throwing semi trailers at each other among other things are not realistic. These are the best action scenes I have ever seen in a superhero film. The Batman films have the worst. This film is more fun than the Batman films. And the only people I can see having a problem with this film is people who haven't read the comics, and have only watched the movies. Sure some characters are only there to cross off a box on a checklist, but they will be necessary in the next film, and it's easier to set them up now.

This is the second best superhero movie I've seen, and it is definitely the best Superman film EVER. I don't know what the critics were smoking, but this is a great film, and if you like superman, you need to see this now.

it is a great film but I didn't like it as much as I hoped. I had really high expectations.  I have some problems with it, but overall I think it's a great film, and I am a big Superman fan.

That seems to be the point. Everyone was expecting this to be the second coming of Jesus. I was just expecting it to be better than Superman Returns.

Funny you should say "second coming of Jesus" because at one point during the movie I was seeing the conflict between Superman and Zod as religion vs. science on some level.

The whole film is wrought with not so subtle christian symbolism lol.

I was thinking what a Church of Superman would be like while watching the film. Weird huh?

I thought the action was great, at least for being adrenaline-inducing and looking pretty, but a lot of the writing and acting really fell flat for me. Which is odd, cause I tend to love the work of pretty much everyone involved. It did do its job of making me want IHOP though, or maybe that's because I was somehow raised on CMT without having cable growing up. Tongue Out

But I get why people like it, I just thought it was ok, but could have been a lot better. I'll probably see it again on DVD at some point.

Still, 55 for the best superman film that has ever been?

I'm sure audience is way higher. It is on Rottentomatoes at least. And I know it's campy, but I think II is still my favorite, and I didn't hate Returns, although I do like MoS more.

Superman Returns is the worst piece of shit that has ever come out I swear to god. It ruined superman.

No thanks I will pass. I have not watched anything Superman since Superman IV. I plan to keep it that way.

This is so much better. I think you'd like it.

Homelessrook

If Kevin Smith does one I will watch it. Until then, I am sticking with my oldschool Superman movies. I am glad you can find some enjoyment in the movie but for me it just is not the same.

The preveiws were enough for me.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

06/30/2013 at 09:07 PM

I don't think they are really indicative of the film. I mean I went in expecting a dark knight movie, but it wasn't. Seriously, the film is nothing like the trailers, just watch it.

Homelessrook

06/30/2013 at 09:11 PM

I just can not do it. He did a great job with Batman but I was tired of Superman Remakes and redos for a while now. Live action that is.

Super Step Contributing Writer

I would love to see Kevin Smith's script put to use, they paid him enough to write it, apparently. Just as long as Jon Peters' Wild Wild West spider isn't involved. lol

Blake Turner Staff Writer

06/30/2013 at 09:01 PM

No thanks. Have you read Kevin Smith's run with Batman Comics? They were fucking terrible.

Homelessrook

06/30/2013 at 09:03 PM

Kevin Smith has fogotten more about comic than we could ever learn.

Super Step Contributing Writer

06/30/2013 at 09:18 PM

I have not. To be honest, last comic I read was Batman Noel. So yeah, I admit I come at these movies just knowing the movies.

Homelessrook

06/30/2013 at 09:02 PM

That is why he turned down the script because they wanted the mechanical spider.lol.

I know, I used to watch his Q&A videos all the time; one of my favorite stories from those. lol

I enjoyed the movie, but then, I'm easily entertained.  I think a lot of critics expect too much out of movies today.  As long as you're entertained, then what's the problem?

I didn't think it was like a Dark Knight movie.  They tried to make it like one, but Superman is a different kind of super hero, so it's just going to have a different kind of feel, whether they like it or not.

I heard some complained that Superman saved Lois Lane too many times in the movie, but that's just what he does!

Only problem I had with the movie was the corporate sponsorship was totally blatant.  I wouldn't be surprised if IHOP served Superman pancakes now.  Or even worse, if they changed Superman's mythos so that he got his powers by eating pancakes!

Blake Turner Staff Writer

06/30/2013 at 08:55 PM

I didn't notice any, but then again we don't have IHOP in Australia. Also, he only saved her three times...

I think that's the point I'm trying to make. It was a fun film. It had it's flaws, but it was far from a failure.

I don't really know much about Superman, but I thought it was great. To be honest I only went to see it because of Amy Adams lol. I love her. I was pleasently surprised though. No emotion my ass. I was getting all choked up at some parts.

Same here! The bit at the end with Zod, to name one...

It's cirtainly the best Superman movie of this century but i still place S2 above it, much of the critisim is BS and they cloud some of the more legit ones like badly use of shakey cam (it works in the film some times but often it's just badly implemented).

As a comics geek i see what they left in and taken (funny since i'm not a superman fan) and a lot of the internal logic is more superior than previous films, all those critics giving it 55 are really unapreciative of just how bad Returns wasFrown

I'm one of those who felt the killing of Zod was bad, npt so much Superman Killing but it simply didn't convince me that was the only option (apparently Goyer and Snyder "fought" Nolan to make it so Zod was killed by Sups but it didn't seem they put to much thought into the scene itself), Oh and John Kents death was utter BS and lazily written i'd go on but that would be it's own rant Tongue Out

Anyway Good movie but highly flawed 79 from me,

It was a little too dark of a take on Superman for my tastes, but still had a ton of fun watching it. Wanted just something more lighthearted than that from that superhero specifically, but like with Amazing Spiderman, once the fun started, I forgot all about that. The Lois Lane stuff was kind of weak too even though I love that they cast Amy Adams to play her. The only actresses I'm happier to see are Mila Kunis and Emmy Rossum.

Kick Ass 2 will still be the best superhero movie this year though.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

Superman has been dark since the late 80's though in the comics. This is a fairly faithful adaptations (Changes to characters not withstanding)

Casey Curran Staff Writer

Yeah, but that still doesn't change that I prefer the more lighthearted Superman and never thought dark worked for him that well.

I haven't seen it personally but I loved what I have seen in the previews. There's no mob more cynical and spoiled than fandom, though. (And sadly with "geeks ruling the world" many "fans" are journalists or critics.)

The comparison I like to make is to Watchmen. Superman had a similar pacing and mood to it I thought.

I'm not a huge Superman fan. My friends basically dragged me to it (although I did want to see Superman on fire like in the trailer), but I thought it was very good. Action, acting, casting, etc... all seemed just right. Everyone has their own version of Superman they like though, so I can see some superfans thinking this wasn't their thing, but film making wise, I would say it's excellent. 55 on metacritic baffles me. I would've thought the critics at least would have liked it.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

I've never been a HUGE superman fan, but I liked him enough, especially when he teamed up with Batman. I loved this film though, as you can probably tell.

I expected the worst when reading the title, as I thought you were going to do a rant of why you didn't like the movie. Gotta sat you caught me by surpriseWink

Anyway, I saw the movie yesterday. Really had a great experience. It started a bit fast and I don't really think it's a perfect film, but for the most part, I had a blast with the interesting story, characters and actors and the action sequences. Like I said, there's some flaws like with the shaky camera and some decisions for some characters and the implications with all the destruction and you know, the scene with the artificial humans on the ship, but they weren't enough bad to spoil my experience. To boot the good things I said, Hans Zimmer was a boss with the sountrack, it had some great moral thoughts on Superman and the idea of being a superhero, great special effects and I really loved the flying. Okay, maybe some of the flaws stop it from being my superhero movie of the year (Iron Man 3 holds that so far) and it's not my favorite superhero film, but it could definitly be one of my top movie of this year.

It's definitely flawed. However for me those flaws don't ruin it.

I just saw this movie over the weekend, and overall I really enjoyed it. I think the only drawback was the way the origins were presented. I dug the concept, I just thought that the editing in the beginning was poorly executed.

It's hard to explain I suppose. I understand them jumping around (Him landing in the field, then showing him 30 years later on a fishing boat), but it just seemed to be from Point A to Point V, skipping B-U but coming back at random intervals. Know what I'm saying? It's hard to explain, lol

Blake Turner Staff Writer

I liked that. It cut to the modern day, and gave us the cliff notes of his childhood. It made sense to do it that way, otherwise the movie would be four hours long.

My take... Overall I LOVED the movie. Particularly for the effects, the action, and the fighting. This was the first Superman movie to show what kind of destruction can happen when two Kryptonians REALLY go at each other on Earth. The battles were so badass I teared up a little. And Krypton was AMAZING, perfectly alien yet familiar. I also like the fact we dont' have to pretend Lois can't recognise Superman with glasses on. And I like the darker tone, we've had enough bubblegum Superman. This guy needs to exist in the same world as Dark Knight, we do have a Justice League moving coming, afterall.

I do have nitpick gripes though;

Lois Lane was pretty much cut and paste. Anyone could have played her, I don't think whats her name owned it. Same with Supe himself, he fit the bill but I don't love him the way I love Christopher Reeve.

Also some of the editing was a bit janky, The transitions between some of the scenes were too harsh and felt slapped together. I think some scenes were cut out and when they stitched it up it got hacky.

Nick Swardson has a good take on todays movies. He said he loves all the big budget popcorn movies like Transformers. He said if someone in the 50's were to see these movies today they'd be running out of the theater screaming shock. Today we just go "eh, it sucked, bro". Sucked? DO YOU NOT SEE WHAT IS HAPPENING ON THAT SCREEN!??!!?!?

Yeah. I agree, although I do think this Cal El was brilliant.

I personally liked it. The film was a bit too Nolan-esque for a Superman film and with Zack Snyder at the helm I did expect more. That's the issue I suppose Expectations were too high!

Blake Turner Staff Writer

07/01/2013 at 06:18 PM

When has Snyder ever made something that isn't dark? He's like a dumber Nolan who can actually make fight scenes.

Townz90

07/01/2013 at 06:38 PM

I mean it didn't feel like a Snyder movie, it felt like Nolan's Superman understandable as I believe he had a producers role in the film. Besides the point considering I did enjoy it
